Canyon Runner Fishing Reports and Updates – Slow Striper Fishing – Time for Tuna
Sorry for the late reports but we’ve been swamped with trips and as soon as we get back to the dock we’re hard at it getting both boats ready for our canyon tuna season. We start fishing on Thursday with an overnighter on the 60’ Ritchie (however this looks like it will get blown out) and then Friday on the 48’ with a one-day canyon trolling trip. We take Saturday off and then start going on Sunday every single day the weather allows. We do have some room left for inshore trips so don’t hesitate to call.
As for canyon trips we are getting filled up quick. We have 12 overnighters on each boat in June and 18 overnighters on each boat in July – so we plan on having tons of reports and pictures to share. If you want to fish with us in the canyons this year please don’t wait anymore – we only have 3 dates left total in July and 8 dates in August between both boats. I can always be reached at 732-272-4445. Remember we do open boat canyon trips too so don’t miss out.
Now for the late reports – sorry again!
Last Week of May First of June
As for the remainder of the striper season for us – there isn’t much to report. It really fell off the last week of May. We had two trips on May 27 with the Chris Avery charter in the morning and Paul Pedretti group in the afternoon and a double on May 28 with Dave Stewart in the morning and a trip we donated at the Save the Summer Flounder Fishing Fundation that was won by Al Durso – all these trips saw very limited action. We fished through Memorial Day weekend with some trips catching 5 to 8 bass but most only catching a couple. The first week of June saw the Glenn Hoffenrberg, Tom Kelly, Chuck Sergey, Jimmy Burke, Aaron Weiss and Will Vhou charter all work hard to put catches together with Capt. Mark DeBlasio at the helm but most trips again only saw a few fish each trip with some trips even less. The fish were big and the trips were spiced up with Sea Bass but nothing like we got use to seeing in late April and most of May.
Canyon Runner Stripers – Day/Night Double Header – 6/7
This week we had Guy Biondi out on Monday, June 7 up to the Shrewsbury Rocks and worked the offshore pieces on the troll picking a large striper for a few hours work. They finished off fluking but there really wasn’t much to speak of.
On Monday night Capt. Burt Rothenberg from “Jersey Giant” fame ran our 48’ with the Mark Cooke charter and put the afternoon group into a nice catch. They worked the deep up off of Long Branch then down off of Sea Girt in 70+ feet of water. Live lining bunkers – which weren’t too hard to find – they had close to 30 bites. With a charter learning quickly on the rod they missed a bunch but ended up with 8 in the box.
Canyon Runner Sea Bass Trip – 6/8
On Tuesday, June 8 Capt. Phil gave the stripers another chance with the Terry Minor charter in the morning only to strike out completely in a few hours of fishing. With no stripers in the box they wiggled offshore of the Shrewsbury Rocks by the Rattlesnake and put her on the hook. The sea bass were quickly flying over the gunnel. They had sea bass over 4pounds with close to 50 keepers and twice as many throw backs in just one drop and only a few hours of fishing.
