Well the fishing is hanging in there as the weather has allowed us to get out 6 overnighters in a row since Friday. It has become an every other night thing – that is - Friday night was slow, Saturday night was great, Sunday night was slow and Monday night was great – Here is Monday’s report:
Our 60’ Ritchie Howell Canyon Runner left the dock early with Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Hook running the show the Joe Cary charter hit the Toms Canyon at 1pm and started on the troll. We didn’t expect much as it’s almost 100% a chunk bite now. We definitely didn’t expect what happened as we worked our way out to the deep and the warmer water. What happened was a visit from the man in the blue suit and an hour fight on our Penn 50VSW that ended with our 9th Blue Marlin release of the year. This blue marlin was right around 400 pounds. The rest of the troll bite was non-eventful and we set up on the chunk at 6pm.
It didn’t take long to get the bite going as we picked fish throughout the night. And these are big fish. This was the charter’s first time offshore and the 80-100 pound yellowfin worked them hard and with a dozen fish fought throughout the night they had constant action. On top of that they hooked a big swordfish that they battled for 1.5 hours only to breakoff. At 2am the charter had enough and wanted to head home. They ended with 8 big yellowfin and told the mates if they hooked another one the crew would have to reel it in.
On the 48’ Canyon Runner Capt. Mark was having similar success with an open boat charter. They arrived in the dark and went right to the chunk and had action immediately and all night long. They worked their tails off anchored in 600 feet of water in the Toms Canyon area and fought well over 25 yellowfin for the night. In total 11 big yellowfin were boated on the chunk plus one nice sword.
Wednesday night was also on the slow side, kinda of - with a few fish for each boat and some swords mixed in with the Jenny Lee one of the sole boats just crushing the fish on the troll with 21 huge yellowfin. This was again in the Toms Canyon area.
Thursday night was hot again with my boats coming back right now with over 20 fish caught on each boat – full report to follow:
Most importantly we have had a few last minute cancellations on the 60’ Ritchie Howell for this Sunday-Monday and Monday-Tuesday. The weather looks like it will clear up nicely and the fishing is better than it's been in years so please call me at 732-272-4445 or email me at adam@canyonrunner.com if interested. I will be offering a big discount since the charters that had these dates cancelled at the last minute and forfeited their deposits.
