Canyon Runner Crew Report-7/28 1/2 on Whites, Yellowfin, and Mahi

We did a crew(Brad Burgess, Adam LaRosa, Mike Zajac, Chris Hempstead, John Timken, and Capts. Phil, Mark, and Billy) trip on Saturday and just did a one day trolling trip to the Hudson Canyon to look around a little closer to home. We had some decent reports in finishing up our last trip there on Friday so ran right to West Wall on the 100 fathom line and worked down to around the turn for out first bite. We worked the area and picked at yellowfin all day, though it was very frustrating. We had over 15 bites with fish taking drag (or boiling and missing the bars)but droped off 10 fish only bringing 5 to the gaff.

With just crew members on the boat we trolled 13 rods. The pattern included 5 six-inch Canyon Runner rainbow squid bars trolled of the riggers and everything else was ballyhoo with either moldcraft little hookers in blue/white or Ilanders in blue/white or green/yellow. At least half the bites came on the squid bars and half on the ballyhoo.

A bonus to the trip was raising 2 white marlin into the pattern. Both were teased off the spreader bars to ballyhoo right behind the boat. We missed the first one, however we were ready for the 2nd one. This was a huge white that was easily over 80 pounds which was release at the boat with the hopes it returns again during our tournament run next month! I'll add pixs soon.

    Final Total:
    5 (3 over 70 lbs.) Yellowfin
    2 Mahi
    1/2 on Whites

Pretty work....I hate when they don't eat the damn hook bait, but 5 is better than 0 any day.

    Looking forward to pics.

Northstar Sirius Weather Saved This Trip

For those of you that saw the last two reports of our trips on Saturday and then again Sunday/Monday we left out one very important point. We almost did not get them in due to the severe lightening storms we had but were able to due so due to our Northstar Sirius Weather.

For anyone spending the weekend in NJ, I am sure dealt with all those torrential thunderstorms Friday night on land in western and northern NJ and again Saturday and Sunday afternoon right on the coast. We were leaving Friday night to go off for the Saturday day trolling trip and almost cancelled due to the threat of severe lightening within those storms. However, we just turned on the Northstar 6100i with the Sirius Weather Package and tracked those storms inland and noted that they were not move towards the east to the coast but instead where moving due north so off we went. Once a few miles offshore I put the Sirius Weather on a radar loop and clearly saw the track of the storms was 100% to the north and that they were dissipating with the lightening strikes almost completely gone.

I was running out to the canyon that night side-by-side with Dave and Jimmy on the Jenny Lee and we were both worried about those storms but once the Sirius weather confirmed they were dissipating and I called those guys to let them know a sigh of relief was heard on both boats and we were both able to sit back and enjoy one of the nicest mid-night rides offshore with a flat sea and almost full moon. Without that confirmation, both of us would have had our stomach in knots the whole ride out worrying about those storms and may have in fact cancelled.

On the way in Saturday we again saw severe lightening storms right on the coast right over Manasquan Inlet. We could see from the weather loop on the Northstar 6100i that these storms were not moving this time and we were heading right for them. We again saw that they were dissipating and just slowed the boat down timing our arrival at the inlet for when the storms seemed to be going to die out. We were never hit with a drop of rain.

This similar scenario occurred Sunday around noon when we were headed back out for an overnighter. Again we were able to track the storms, know with 100% confidence they were not a threat to us, and get the trip in.

We can’t say enough about this weather package and neither can our charters who almost had their trips cancelled – no one likes lighting and the system helped us avoid it.
    Tight lines,
