Canyon Runner Bluefin Jigging - 3/30 - They're Still Here!!!!

Capt. Mark DeBlasio took his shot this morning on a forecast of west winds and seas dropping out and spreading out at Diamond Shoals bouy and made the right call. About 5 other boats were on the grounds today and while it took some time to locate a body of fish once they were found it was game on with big fish!!!!!!

Trolling until 10:30am working the temp break clearly depicted on our new Simrad NSE equipment the bluefins were found a little further off they last week but they were found. Once they were found the jigging equipment came out and with two fish hooked up on the troll the first jig to hit the water hooked up as well.

From 10:30am to 11am they had 9 fish on and released 4 or 5 putting a nice 69 inch fish in the boat around 175#. There after they hooked another 6 or 7 and released around 10 total when on talked to them on the SAT around 2pm. They were going to fish until 3pm and head in. Basically someone on the boat was fighting a fish almost continuously from 10:30 until just before I spoke to them at 2pm.

With a little luck we'll be able to fish right through the weekend into next week and hope to post a bunch more pictures and videos. Tomorrow will be nice as run to right where we left off today.

Since the word is out there our calendar quickly filled up for this week and most of next but we still have a few openings on what are primarily open boat trips.

These trips are leaving from Pirate's Cove Marina fishing out of Oregon Inlet. Cost is $300/person for open boat trips with 6 guys and that includes everything including the tip.

We are fishing until the fish disappear and then will cancel the remaining trips as the boat needs to be hauled and get some bottom paint on her. Right now we are booked right through Monday, April 5.

    We have the following available:

    April 6 - 2 Spots
April 7- 4 Spots or Whole Boat
April 8 - 2 Spots or Whole Boat
April 12 - 5 Spots or Whole Boat

Please call me at 732-272-4445 or email me at adam@canyonrunner.com if you are interested or have any questions.

They fished until 4pm and ended up with over 25 hook-ups and released over 15 fish. I think I heard them say the last fish to the boat was the biggest close to 250# but I could be wrong as the SAT phone was breaking up.

Come on Monday... This will be the longest weekend of the year for me, hopefully a youth turkey hunt will help pass some time on Saturday. Some quality family time on Sunday then grbbing a couple boys and we are out of here!

Sounds like you guys have them dialed in. Thanks for the report.

canyon runner, I was curious what jigging outfits you use. I heard from some capts. In NC that you busted a few rods and reels today. Was planning on heading out and want to know what gear to bring for this class of fish.

It's the nature of the game when you want to catch 250 pound fish on gear we all use to use for fluke!!! We busted a custom jigging rod yesterday and the real seat of a Torque. Last Thursday the guys brought a bunch of very "light" spinning tackle and broke 2 rods and 2 reels.

The stuff that can handle these fish without breaking are our Penn 16VSX - they are having no problem getting these fish to the boat relatively quickly and it's all we'll use going forward unless guys bring their own equipment.

Got 'em up to 90 inches today with our first and only trophy fish of the year in the boat. We released an 86 inch fish off today to the Tag-a-giant team as well. I'll have a full report when they get back to the dock.
