Canyon Runner 7/18 - Chunking Starts - 38 Yellowfin and a Giant Bluefin!!!

The canyons are on fire again – and inshore ain’t bad either. Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the John Dale charter out Saturday morning and ran right back to the Bluefin grounds by the Chicken Canyon. Putting out the way way back ballyhoo and a planner rod it didn’t take long until one of the ballys on the way back was eaten. This fish was a real one. The fight carried on for a very long time with John on the rod for most of it and ended up 2 hours later with an 80 inch Bluefin laying alongside the boat. The fish was fought on a Penn International 50VSW and swam away fine. They also picked a 35 pound Bluefin in there as well.

They motored out to the Hudson Canyon and worked out to the 100-square area to find a nice break and a ton of fish. In very short order they had 11 yellowfin and 1 for 2 on white marlin. They finished up the afternoon troll tagging and releasing yellowfin with a total of 24 fish with many tagged and released including the white marlin.

In release mode already they decided to focus on swording at night and only put out one tuna rod – well that rod caught 5 yellowfin at night and they caught another one on a spinning rod and popper right at daybreak when the yellowfin were breaking all around the boat. More interesting a boat next to us that did not do well on the troll worked the chunk bite hard and limited out on the chunk. These are all big yellowfin on the chunk “just like the ole days DAVE” – so if you miss chunking yellowfin get out there NOW!!! Of course watch the weather.

Up on the trolling the morning the amazing fishing continued. They trolled fish all morning actually running away from yellowfin that were feeding on the surface to look for a big-eye. That didn’t work – they caught another 14 yellowfin before 8am and ended the trip with 38 yellowfin (22 YELLOWFIN WERE TAGGED FOR SCIENCE AND RELEASED).

The yellowfin were all over our Canyon Runner Spreader Bars in Rainbow Squid and Green and Rainbow Green Machines and large ballyhoo and very large jet and single lures.

Nice report! How was the offshore weather Sunday? I bagged a trip due to the nasty forecast, was it as bad as made out to be?

    Thanks guys!

Weather was about to get rough around 2am Sunday morning when winds laid out. It was comfortable on the morning troll but was a little bumpy for the 48 Viking for the first 40 miles homes.

It was not nice by any strecth of the imagination but not bad either.

Tag them behind the second dorsal if at all possible. This was relayed to me by the UNH tag a tiny program. I was told that it helps them hydrodynamicly, food for thought.
Nice to hear they are on the chunk bite!!

Awesome day CR guys! I'd love to fish with you sometime.

On the BFT I'm sure you know but just a clarification in hopes of spreading the word to those who might not:

Large Medium bluefins are 73 inches to less than 81 inches curved fork length (CFL).

Giants are 81 inches CFL and greater.

Therefore, the NMFS Angling Category "Trophy" quota and the General Category quota, both of which apply to fish over 73 inches CFL, include fish from the Large Medium and Giant size classes.

    See https://hmspermits.noaa.gov/other/BFTsizeclass.doc .

Scientists don't agree on everything I guess. We tag 'em exactly where we were told to tag 'em.

Do you have a contact at UNH? I'll give them a call.
