Capt. Mark DeCabia and Capt. Pete Doran were back out sailfishing with the Todd Kole Charter on Tuesday of last week.
Bait was real tough in the morning and after a few stops on some good piles in the ocean we were off. Within getting the kites spread eagle three gaffer dolphin (above 10lbs) piled on the baits and we landed all three. We continued to pick away at the dolphin ending up with 8 for the morning. We also had the biggest shock of all, when one of the charter members said there is something large behind the left long kite bait. I quickly went over and reeled up the bait and watch a 3 foot dorsal come screaming out of the water with my first reaction it being a blue marlin but when a 4 foot Louisville slugger bill started flaring around an d its purple back , there was no doubt in my mind that it was large swordfish of about 300lbs. We were tight on the fish for a little while as it just peeled line off out to the east of us like it didn’t even know it was hooked. Shortly after the 50lb leader parted and the monster glided off.
The day ended without a sail but we had plenty of action from blackfins, mahis, kings, bonito. They had to come home for our NY seminar but are back on their way south for some more fishing start this Thursday thru the end of the following week.
