Capt. Mark DeBlasio had a couple trips in the middle of the week on the 48 Viking and continued to beat up on the tuna. Fishing Tuesday-Wednesday with the Kevin McDermott charter from Pt. Pleasant, NJ/London, England we saw our only tough trip of the week. But in the end, this trip among all others saw the crew work harder.
The made it to the Hudson around 4pm and spent the afternoon looking but not catching. The night was spent the same way with only a small mako swimming up to the boat but not taking a bait. The morning troll was also looking slow as they just couldn’t buy a bite. Finlly Capt. Mark and crew decided to leave the fleet that was picking away and go find their own fish. They did – stretching the trip out a few more hours they find their own school and picked away going 8 for 12 on nice yellowfin and salvaging the trip and making for a very happy charter.
Doing a later turn around trip leaving the dock at 8pm with the Anthony Bevaqua charter on Wednesday Capt. Mark DeBlasio tried to hang a nice mako by stopping short of the canyon. That did not work as they only released a few blue sharks but did not see any makos. Up on the troll in the morning fishing down the line from the Hudson they found a really good bite.
They quickly nailed a double of longfin and a triple of yellowfin and were sitting on five fish during a short lull in the action. That didn’t last long as at 9am a big-eye exploded on a blue/white Ilander ballyhoo combo down the middle and the battle was on. 2 long hours later they had the 69 inch – 202 pound big-eye in the boat. They didn’t stop there as the pick continued into the afternoon with the charter nailing another 9 yellowfin.
The yellowfin are eating rainbow Canyon Runner Squid and Green Machine bars and lots of ballyhoo. Most of the bites are in 500-800 feet of water.
Guys - the fishing just doesn't get better. If you are sitting at the dock - go! If you are waiting to book a charter - book it now - with anyone - doesn't have to be us just go and don't wait any longer.
As the last two years showed us while we had great fishing in June and July the last 3 years it slowed up in August and September so it could happened again.
Attached are pictures from a few trips and of course the big-eye.
