Canyon Runner 48 - 5 Trips - 7th Blue Marlin of Year Chunking Turns On!!

We’ve been busy on both boats so I’m going to combine 5 trips in this post.

The first was back on August 1-2 with an open boat charter. Capt. Mark DeBlasio left Manasquan for the Toms Canyon with Capt. Deane Lambros and Capt. Ryan DiBagio in the pit. They made it to the Toms late at night and did not start chunking until almost midnight – they then went 2 for 8 on the chunk losing a little too many fish. They caught some mahis as well but in the morning nothing happened on the troll so they ran into the Chicken Canyon and bailed out the trip with 2 nice Bluefin and 4 yellowfin.

On Saturday, August 7 after being at the dock with bad weather the Miles Dolan charter left the dock at 4pm with Capt. DeBlasio on the wheel and the typical crew in the cockpit. They headed to the Toms Canyon and ran right to the Hendrickson where the 60’ Ritchie was in the middle of a nice bite. They got there with only 1 hour to troll and made the most of it by boating 6 nice yellowfin. They ran down to the south Toms to chunk but it did not prove beneficial. Up on the trolling in the morning they caught another 3 nice yellowfin and tagged and released a few smaller ones.

On Monday, August 9 Capt. Mark took another open boat charter and headed to the Hudson Canyon this time. As soon as he arrived on the West Wall he had yellowfin in the spread and in 4 hours boated 7 big yellowfin, a wahoo and mahi. Unfortunately, he wouldn’t get another bite the entire trip – nothing at night and nothing the next morning on the troll.

Doing a turn around on Tuesday with another open boat charter they decided to give the Hudson another shot as the water looked good despite the slow end to the previous trip. They started right at the tip this time and had nice life – brids, whales and porpoises and a few fish. They ended up trolling 2 in the afternoon bite and 2 in the morning bite – nothing on the chunk.

We ended this string of trips with a great one. On Wednesday, August 11 the chunking finally started to come together. Capt. Mark left the dock at 6pm and went right to the chunk. They started picking fish after midnight and ended up going 10 for 13 on yellowfin with 7 nice ones and 3 small ones that were released. Up on the troll in the morning they worked all the way back into the tip of the Hudson Canyon and had the bite they were looking for. Kevin McDermott of Pt. Pleasant, NJ has traveled the world looking for his first blue marlin – well he only had to look in his own back yard at 1 hour later a nice 375 pound blue was alongside and released. This was our 7th blue marlin of the young season and ate a ballyhoo on a blue/white Ilander. Congratulations Kevin – I hope the guys threw you in!!
