    Camcorder

I am looking for some help and recommendations for a camcorder to be used in a custom rod holder from the bridge of a sportfisher. I want to simply hit record when we hook up. I have no experience with video, but want to learn to edit and post. Thanks for your help!

I am not an expert, but do your research and make sure the one that you purchase can handle the pounding/jolting of rough seas - maybe a sport model?

    Good Luck.

If I were to do a camera on the boat I would take a serious look at the wearable sport cameras. The holder for the regular camcorder will cost you over $100 if you want to put it in a rod holder. One thing that I found with any camcorder is that it is tough to catch everything unless you have a dedicated camera person. If you just put the camera in one spot and hit record you may catch the strike (if your lucky) then you miss some of the cockpit action. If you focus on the cockpit you miss the fish in the water next to the boat. The mini cameras are waterproof and rugged and in my opinion give you a ton more options. These things are small and light enough to have your mate wear the camera as he is looking at the action. If you have two cameras then you wear one as well and edit the two recording together. Being completely waterproof you can drop the thing into the water and capture some boatside action. I would even consider running the camera back on a teaser or downrigger to just get a different point of view. I have not used these small cameras yet nor have I done all of my research, but I am leaning this way because of the versatility.

I film on boats all the time. I'm 'that dedicated photographer'. Sweet Caroline is right, to get all the good action, you need different angles, etc. Try and get a couple waterproof cams due to the splashes, waves, blood, etc.

This is what I do, so if anyone needs someone to film their adventures, I'm game!

I borrowed one of the wearable camcorders for my trip to guatemala next week. All the mounts they have are for ski goggles and helmets, so I sewed some velcro to a hat. Seems to hold it pretty well.

I also have the underwater housing.

Hopefully it will allow me to fish and film at the same time, without looking like too much of a dork. I'll give the field test results when I get back

    My Decision

I researched and decided to buy a Sony HDR-CX350V HD Camcorder, 32GB, Exmor-R, GPS, 12X, 2.7", iAuto[/B]. I am fishing the Reelin for Research tournament this Sat., May 1st and will try it out then. It may take me a while to post my first video, but I will get it up asap.
