Murph .. all the Boomers I have built are black with wind on guides .. some have Unibutts , some have storbautts and some just have hypalon. If you are building one with a curved unibutt , do yourself a favor and consider a storabutt instead. The curved butts are not great when trolling, but are awesome for chunking. With a storabutt system , you can switch from straight to curved in seconds. We use the straights for trolling then switch to the curved for chunking

Mark & Paul I appreciate the advice - havent used the storabutt - but I think its worth a shot, mainly looking for a chunking rod, but it would be nice to be able to troll as well.

Murph .. I use the SB2S .. which is the short straight storabutt , then order the SB2SC BUTT ONLY , which is the short curved butt (butt only without the ferrule or reel seat) .. another advantage of the system is you can turn the reel seat portion either direction , which changes the reel position. This allows you to find the more comfortable position for you

Murph,if you are Building a mostly chunking rod .you may not need the uni/stora butt.it will make the rod a whole lot lighter to use.without it.also saves about 100$ off the price

Just thinking here Murph .. if you primarily wil use it as a chunking rod , buy the SB2SC as a complete system .. then buy and extra ferrule/nut and use the portion of the blank you cut off to make a straight butt with hypalon for the occasional use as a trolling rod

Weight only really become a factor when you are jigging for hours on end . most times when chunking the rod is in the rod holder as a dead stick or with the angler pulling line off the tip as a working line

mark, really dont want to go there with the weight thing..call me 6105917734..we can talk about it or if you got a trip ready ...But if you can lose a pound or more off a rod and not lose any performance.why not.

I agree light weight is nice , but you have to know where to draw the line . For durability, the calstar,wind-on, aftco butt combo cant be beat .. I fished 117 days this season in the canyon and never saw one fail .. the light weight rods failed pretty often .. just this past weekend I watched a very high quality lightweight blank crumble under the pressure of a large BFT .. the angler has been looking for a 300 lb tuna on the jig for a long time and this was probably the one .. needless to say , once the blank broke and the jagged edge of the broken graphite touched the line , the fish was lost.
