It Was a Smack Down Brawl in Kona Last night!!!

Epic Brawl of Brawls last night...Giant Threshers (well over a 1,000), 2 Mako's, 9 hook ups 5 fish to the boat...ONE Accurate 80 W SPOOLED by who knows what and 3 runoffs with crushed baits...Oh yeah, they broke most of our Shit AGAIN!!!! Will someone please through a Flag on this fish for PILING ON!!!! Wholly crap...

The action only slowed for an hour or so from when we (Kevin Shiraki, Newton Leslie, Lloyd Rewuski and me) dropped our first line, which we couldn't get all the way down because a 500 lb. Thresher ate the bait, but never really fought until I got it on leader, then it went bananas, I had to dump the leader and a bunch skin on the first match, then on the second go around this thing whipped it's tail all the way under the 27 foot Force Cat and smashed the fish box in the middle of the boat behind...Also perfectly clipping off the second guide on my Ian Miller 130. I took Three wraps and dug in and broke it off, no need to get any close to this critter...

Score: Threshers disable, one accurate / Ian Miller Combo...

Kevin was the angler de jour and did great on all the fish he had to handle (namely the first four, with the last one being the Monster Thresher)…However when I took over the angling, the fish decided to through a special smack down, you don’t know Diddly, lesson about big fish taking ALL your line.

Immediately after the first fish, we put down another bait and got bit, this time it was about a 300 lb. Mako which we got on leader a released quickly, then dropped another bait and immediately hooked another 100 lb. Mako which we also released. We heard then saw the bigger of the two Mako's jumping behind our boat about 50 feet away...Still pissed off.

This was all before 8:20 pm...The moon wasn't supposed to pop up until just before 10:00 PM...THAT was supposed to be primetime...

So we went about 45 minutes without a bite and then picked up our stuff and moved back to where we had started the original drift, ten minutes later wammo a solid slashing bite that ran off about 75 yard but came off, we got the bait back crushed with major scuffs on the leader. So either Ahi or Swordy...Most likely Swordy, but we'll never know!!!

Then ten minutes later the rod goes off again...This time it's a monster Thresher, definitely biggest Thresher Shark I have ever seen here (much bigger than the 952) way over a 1,000 for sure not a crazy battle, but we were real conservative with the drag because we are treating all fish like they're Swordy's until we get them up to the boat and verify. When I pulled this one into the light on leader 1.5 hours later it was an unbelievable sight...I have never been so impressed with a fishes size, this was a real MONSTER!!!

So after releasing this Monster fish that we easily handled with our 80W packed with spectra and 130 top shot. We GET ANOTHER bite...This is a cool run of about 300 yards before we pull hook...Same thing again scuffed leader, crushed bait and we are seeing several big marks under the boat...

THEN it's the bite and run of the century ten minutes later...This fish absolutely blasts off! I bump it to 24 pounds of drag after I harness in and all it does is piss this thing off I am really suspecting Thresher, but this thing makes 3 distinctive runs (with a 5 second pause between them) that leaves me with 70 yards of 975...Drag did nothing but piss it off, but at the end I had my hands in the spool trying to manage the drag and stop it, which I believe I did because I never felt the thunk of broken line, but rather the pressure just eased off. I cranked about 300 yards of Spectra back on the reel feeling some resistance, but then suddenly there was a big Thunk on the line then zero pressure. I wind up the last 200 yards of what what is left and something has apparently run across the spectra and broken it?

My guess is I was still hooked when the Thunk happened, but the fish had gone in a circle and swam back across the line dragging the in line lead across the spectra and breaking it (it was definitely roughed up and did not break from pressure). When the fish was running the line was pouring straight down, nothing you could do unless you had a submarine!!!

Score: Thresher & Mystery Fish disable 2 Accurate Ian Miller Combo's!!!

Well, I am still calling my Swordy shot because we are going again tonite, this time I am calling the moonrise bite at 10:50pm...IF these damn things don't break all our tackle by THEN!!!

If you want to catch giant hard fighting critters (JOSH) and have an absolute blast doing it...This is your nirvana! We laughed and shot video like fools and had a blast doing it!!!

I'll keep everyone posted tomorrow AM!!!!
