The key, as it is in most fishing, is the bait. If you have a lot of small-to-medium sized fin bait, the longtails are probably there.

These are pretty amazing fish. Those who don't know how to catch them would probably never even know that they were here, which is the way that it used to be out here, yet if you find them and do it right, you can knock the heck out of them (actually, the other way around!)

"Sharks" and "shallow" are two words that don't mix, but big concentrations of small bait inshore should have threshers around them this time of year. What the heck, try trolling inshore for a trip or two - save fuel and maybe get a Tshark or two.

Looking forward to a ride with the young 'uns weekend after this. We're gettin bit on our Spider dredges and I want to see one of the guys catch the first thresher on one.

    Hi fred,

what is the proper trolling speed for threshers ?
    How's your bait ?

    WAYTAGO JOSHSTER!

And welcome to the Thresher fan club. Sounds like you really got into them big time. Great eating, yes, but how about how strong those puppies are? Pound for pound, they're right up there with the strongest of the gamefish and if you get a jumper, it's a sight to see!

    Good on ya, kiddo.

Yer dern right about thier tenacity...and those hits are world class for sure...Whack...WHAck...WHACK!!! HOOK-UP!!!

Our buddies managed to hook one in the mouth and enjoyed a couple of cartwheeling leaps before the fish managed to throw the hook...must have been epic...i've seen them freejumping down here in PV as well but never caught one...although we haven't tried...

Yup...i'm hooked for life now...threshers will now be part of the annual routine while i'm travelling through california...and Kona for that matter...

Another great gamefish added to the list...now if i can just scratch off that elusive white sea bass i'll have most of them licked...

Hey Josh, I know the feeling. I have caught a ton of WSB and Mako's but the sailfish has never even hit my rig. Even if I go to get just a sail, I get another marlin or dodo.
I have seen them but not one tug on the line.
Still got a place over the fireplace that has not gotten any other fish because I am saving it.(replica not fish mount) for the sailfish I hope to someday catch.

That's funny...but a fairly decent problem to have...shoot i'll trade you days when it's tough to get a bait PAST a sailfish for a shot at anything else!

You best be gettin down to Guatemala there son...go see my friend Brad Phillips on the Decisive...he'll fill that mantel in a hurry...

    Good luck!
