Congrats on a great trip with your buds. I wonder why the crews over there haven't embraced circle hooks yet? Saw a couple of your fish bleeding. Did the crews tell you why they don't? Just curious
I didn't want to hijack these guys fun fishing trip but you asked so I'll give you my take.
I fish Cabo 200 days a year so let me give you my first hand knowledge on the Circle Hook, J-Hook debacle. First, it's a disgrace that more boats don't use Circle Hooks in Cabo. I can tell you that I would guess that over 80% of the private boat owners use circle hooks and you can reverse that percentage for the Charter boats that don't use Circle Hooks. I'm not bragging (yes I am) but I'll go head to head with anyone in Cabo right now out at Golden Gate with me using Circle Hooks and anyone else using J-hooks and I'll kick your arse 99% of the time for total number of Stripped Marlin caught in a day.
Last week I fished from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm and I personally released 47 Marlin. I had to stop at 2:00 pm when I snapped a rod and dislocated my index finger. You can clearly watch which boats are fishing with J-hooks and those with Circle Hooks and over 80% of the boats fishing with the J's are the Charter boats. Now they think because they released the fish everything is A-OK and that fish will live to fight another day. Not so, recent studies have shown that the internal damage caused by the J-Hooks will cause that fish to die within 24-48 hours over 50%-60% of the time. Fish released after being caught by Circle Hooks have a 100% survivability rate. Even you noted the fish bleeding in the pictures from being caught by the J-Hooks.
Here's other studies done over the past several years, I didn't make up these numbers and this is just a small sampling of the studies showing clearly that released Marlin caught on J-Hooks have a much less likelihood of survival then those caught with Circle Hooks.
You guys and gals going to Cabo or anywhere to fish should insist that the boat you charter uses Circle Hooks. Believe me, if that were to happen, you'd see a dramatic change in attitudes. There are plenty of people smarting than me also beating the Circle Hook drum in Cabo, Dave Brackman, Minerva, Chris Badsey just to name a few. Chris and Dave hold several current World Records for most Marlin caught in one day, two days and by an individual and it was all done with Circle Hooks.
Shame on RedRum and shame on anyone not fishing Circle Hooks!
