    Cabo questions

I was wondering if someone could help me out. I am looking to go to Cabo with some other couples and we are looking to find a good boat to charter for a couple of days. Preferably an American boat willing to run if we have too. Looking to striclty billfish.

Also looking for suggestion of some nice places to stay maybe all inclusive. this will keep the women occupied. thanks for the help.

    Vaughn,

Whatever you do, be sure to check out Tail Chaser and Dream Weaver Sportfishing. They sound like exactly what you're looking for.

Be sure to tell them that I sent you.

You didn't say when you plan on going, but that is very important if you're only interested in "billfish." Also, what type of billfish do you want to catch? Like everywhere else, Cabo's fish come and go. If you're interested in striped marlin then Oct. - Jan is your best bet usually. Usually there won't be any blue marlin at that time of year, but this year there were several caught in Dec.- Feb., but that was likely due to the El Nino that is currently happening. However, this is not "normal." I'd advise you to fish for what's biting and follow the advice of whom ever it is that you've chartered. Especially if you're not experienced with the local.

The charter's Capt. Fred mentioned are great. I'd also add Renegade Mike, Picante's fleet, and Manirva's. There are several others too. But, never charter a boat from a hawker off the street. You'll get a good price, but you won't be happy.

Here's a couple of recommendations for charter companies, and I second some of the suggestions already posted:
    Minervas
    Dream Weaver
    Checkmate
    Pocho's

They're all good choices so I'd suggest contacting them all and see which one you get a good feel from.

Regarding places to stay.... there's a lot of choice but for all-inclusives I'd look at RIU as they're close enough to town to walk it if you like. I'm not a fan of all-inclusive resorts myself, prefer to have the freedom to go eat and drink where I wish. Lots of the all-inclusives have food that leave's a bit to be desired.

I just returned from a trip down to Cabo and stayed a few nights at a new resort that's about 4 km outside of Cabo on the corridor. It's called Sirena del Mar and it was absolutely one of my favorites and I've been going to Cabo for over 25 years. If you're looking for loud and crowded, stay at the RIU or other resorts along Medano Beach. But, it you'd rather have a place where you can get away from all the noise and stay in what are arguably the best appointed rooms for the money, Sirena del Mar is the place. They close down their restaurant and bar at 5:00pm so it's peaceful as hell. It's nestled in between Cabo Bello which is a prime piece of coastal real estate with private condos and villas and Esperenza... the most expensive hotel in Cabo. Outstanding views from every balcony.

The rooms also have a washer/dryer tucked into a closet (makes it easy to pack light!), full kitchens with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, a dishwasher and all the plates, glasses and drink making gear including a blender for margaritas. Bedrooms have huge jacuzzi tubs (two people no problem), bathrooms have double vanities and a shower with three heads - rainshower above and two heads on opposing walls.

42" plasma in the living room, 32' in the bedroom. There's a dining room inside and out on the balcony. Balconies also have couches and a hammock. Free in-room Wi-Fi. This place is just awesome.

If you need other info on Cabo, check out CabosBest.com.

Enjoy the trip, but like others have said.... I wouldn't strictly focus on marlin.... be ready for whatever presents itself and you'll have a great time on the water.

Thumbs up Dream Weaver Hands Down!

My family and I fished three days, during Christmas break with the Dreamweaver crew (Ramon and Fernando)...Absolutely great guys! Ridiculous fishermen! They love what they do.

Talk about a coincidence, I was gonna make a post asking a few questions myself and voi la, you did it for me.

Who should a guy call for light tackle or fly guides?

What's going on there in April-June?

Just a head's up. Checkmate Fleet is actually the same as Tail Chaser.

The other recommendations are good ones too. Just be sure to book in advance, as there are only a few truly top flight boats down there and they usually book up fast and pretty far out. And for sure, do not book with any of the guys walking around town.

As far as fly fishing is concerned, there is a dedicated fly fishing fleet down there that runs cats and knows the game very well. The head man is Grant Hartman and this guy really knows big game fly fishing. He even has a fly shop in the marina. The boats are Glacier Bay cats and the crews are trained fly fishing guides. The fleet has something like sixty world records, so they are for real. Unfortunately there are some wannabe fly fleets down there that aren't even remotely qualified, so beware. Be sure to tell Grant that I sent you...he's an old friend.

    Have a great trip!
