I will be bareboat chartering a 42' trawler for 8 days in Feb-March 2009 in the BVI's out of Tortola. Any advice on offshore fishing the Sea Mount or other areas. I will be bringing all my offshore gear and lures. It is mostly a pleasure cruise with another couple but the lines will get wet at some point. Hoping to catch dinner as much as possible.
Be very careful fishing in the BVI without a permit, the officials do not mess around and may be rather costly. Yes, they will ask how much money you have on the boat. Been there and luckily they settled for $350 for not being checked in to British waters as we were staying on St. John. Make sure you take care of that permit. Lots of barracudas around, kingfish on the north side of Jost Van Dyke. Heard there are tarpon on west end of Tortola, never seen one though. Bottom fishing is good in places. Try some deep reefs and drop something down and see what you get. Good luck
North Sound is loaded with resident tarpon in the anchorages as well as at the little island bar/rock. Messing around once w./. a rented CC out of Red Hook I got into kingfish bigger than my tackle could handle trolling the drop off of the line of rocks and cay's that stretch from St Thomas towards Tortola
Ages ago I dove a spot called the Invisibles NE of Virgin Gorda which was probably one of the sea mounts you refer to. Lemon sharks, cero mackerel and tarpon all over the place.
