Brett T. Bailey Mako Rodeo Brielle, NJ 2007
Let me 1st start off by saying what a great event!
Here is a summary of what took place and more information can be found at www.btbmakorodeo.com
On September 11, 2001, Brett Bailey was taken from us, but his spirit, passion, and his eternal pursuit of a good time AND BIG FISH - will forever be a part of our lives.
The 6th ANNUAL BTB MAKO RODEO was held in Brielle, NJ this weekend in honor of Brett T. Bailey, an avid fisherman lost on September 11, 2001. For the sixth consecutive year, the Brett T. Bailey Foundation raised money for various local charities through fundraising efforts associated with this tournament. This year approximately $20,000 was raised and will go to the State of New Jersey National Guard and Reservists, to financially assist those active individuals and families in need, who have decided to make the ultimate sacrifice, to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan, to preserve our way of life
The weather and the fishing were both phenomenal. The winning Mako weighed in at 250lbs at Hoffman’s Marina and was boated by the crew of the ‘Benchmark.” The awards dinner was held Saturday night at Simko’s Restaurant where General Glenn Reith and Mr. Leonard Mayerson, Sgt. Major [ Ret ], were on hand to accept a $20,000 grant on behalf of National Guard State Family Readiness Council from the Brett T. Bailey Foundation. Also at the award’s dinner, the Foundation awarded over $30,000 in prizes and awarded $9,775 to the winning fisherman aboard the ‘Benchmark,’ and the ‘Kingfisher’ who boated a 321lb Thresher shark and won first place in the Thresher Calcutta. Other notable catches include a 232 pound Mako weighed in by the crew of the Andiamo, a 222 pound mako boated by the crew of the ‘Kingfisher’ and a 237 pound Thresher taken by the Crew of the ‘Big Mac.’
The Foundation would like to thank Ed Bendozik of Hoffman’s Marina, Larry Schmidt of Union Landing and Michael Simko of Simko’s Restaurant for their efforts, hospitality and support as well as all the people that participated in this weekend’s festivities. The money raised will hopefully make a difference in the lives of some of the many individuals serving our Country. For information on next year’s tournament or how you can help the Brett T. Bailey Foundation, please contact Art DellaSalla at 732.793.4862.

Now on to my story
It was a SPORTING and SUPPORTING A FOUNTAIN weekend for me!
I had the pleasure of fishing aboard THE HANDYMAN 38 Fountain from VA Beach with Jerry Harris, Jake and Joe!
We set sail around 10:30 Friday night with INSUFISHENT FUNDS with Chunke at the wheel.
It didn't take long at all to get out and get set up in the flat calm seas to found out we had a .4 drift .
By day break we had 3 Blue Sharks to the boat and one seeked revenge on the chum bag by latching on tightly to it tearing a hole in it. Mr.Mako did show his face at the boat and he too like the chum bag a little too much but he just sniffed as he went by! We had a blue dog day out there. Plenty of bait, squid and life
By days end Saturday we finally had some sea's and drift to cover some ground but Mama Mako didn't want to play!
Regardless of what we caught or did not catch we had a ball out there! While the others were sleeping we played with the blue sharks and turned on the alarm clock when Mr. Blue was put up next to the hull for everyone to hear!
Captains and crews it was great seeing all you guys, I had a lot a fun as always! Thanks for the drinks, eats and a place to sleep!
Till next time!
Mary
Here are few pictures that I was able to take along the way! Only so many blue sharks you can take a picture of. The mako was brought in by another boat near us on the dock! The awards was packed and I am sure people didn't want to see just shoulders!
