Bowling Pin teasers

I know this may have been discussed before but I can't find a search bar to check. Here in Florida a lot of captains swear by bowling pin teasers for Marlin. I seen a lot of you discussing fender teasers (toad teasers) here but I am wondering how you feel about the bowling pins for fishing in the Mexican Pacific. I often see big schools of bonita there and also see captains fishing for Marlin using live bonita. Would the bowling pin teasers that look like a school of 4 or 6 12 inch bonita work well? Anyone tried them? How far back would you run them? Also, regarding the fender teasers, if I'm not going to make one which commercial one do you recommend and what size?

I purchased the St. Thomas Bowling Pins Teaser from Melton Tackle. I think it has 6 full size pins. I didnt like the way they swam on top so I drilled holes in them and epoxy glued 3- 3 once egg sinkers in the lip of the pins to make them swin under the water. They work much better that way. I have pulled 2 Blues off them since I started to us them and have missed others. Mako's love to grab them from time to time. I have a Cat boat so when I troll them I shut down one engine and run them off the corner cleat and keep them in the clear water. I will rig a Spanish a have him swimming 6' behind the last pin. When you get a fish on and start to slow down you can pull them in and just have them in the splash well. I put the last teaser over my Fuel filter just to keep it seperated from the rest. When all is said and done you grab the last pin and toss it over, as long as you keep it seperate they wont tangle.

Hope this helps

I fish the Baja, both Sea of Cortez and the Pacific from Cabo to Mag Bay. We've built our own toads and I can't speak highly enough of them. I had two destroyed last year, both punctured, and all three had bill marks on them from most every trip. Ours are painted skipjack reverse (black on the bottom, blue on top) and are deployed on a short stiff one with an old 6/0. When you stop they bob to the surface, making recovery easy. We use them on cruisers and pangas. Don't leave home without them!

put the bowling pins...

on the same line in front of the fender(Wilson). Just use those sampo 3 ways and 500lb. It just flat out works.

I have trolled with them quite a bit. If you feel that you need a little something extra to raise a fish that actively swimming subsurface action will make you feel more confident. I prefer single largish ones trolled close to the boat. The bite often happens on the corner lure right behind it. Most times the instinctual bite you get when they sheer off a teaser and strike a lure is pretty positive, too.

Fenders are bigger and swim deeper, less likely to get struck in their own right, but also harder to clear. Take your choice. They are very easy to make.

I was going to build a couple. I was thinking a 13 inch for inshore and a 16 inch for offshore. I was going to buy blue fenders and paint half black. What size do you use and how much weight in egg sinkers are you running.

why not combine the idea of bowling pin chains and fenders?..........you can make one out of retriever dummies

i have a bowling pin chain but like these just-as-much or more........ i cut off all the little nubs with a razor knife, wrapped'em in holographic tape, gave'em big black eyes with a magic marker and painted the tops blue and belly day-glo yellow and it looked like a school o'chicken dorado chasing my boat

hard to see'em but they're down there in the corner o'the boat....... (behind that dude's pink crocs )

shame the sun whuddn't on'em...... the bodies shimmer

sort of a poor-man's pin chain.......... so cheap as-a-matter-o'fact that i gave'em away knowing i could make more anytime i wanted

i like the ones pictured above the best but you can any color just about.............. even glow-in-dark!

BTW,...... it's the vibration toads put out that's the biggest attraction to'em IMO

and i bet that little toad chain puts out a lot judging by the way they wiggled back-n-forth in a swimming motion so violently

they were attached thru the hole in the lip to a 6oz egg sinker underneath and strung from there to the next one in line the same way

no problem with this chain popping up to the surface

These are the bowling teasers I have. They swim beautifully but I have not had a chance to try them in the Marlin waters yet.

DUDE Pink crocs No wonder the face is blacked out

I wasn't going to do that because I really like this thread. I like to hear from people who know what they are talking about so i dont have to figure things out by myself all the time. But thats what makes this stuff so much fun.

Once again sorry for that one BRO
