Bluewater Lady - Offshore Report 4/14

[Sea Draggin]

We watched the weather and it was looking like there was going to be a window, so we pulled out of the Morehead Waterfront with a group from Richmond. Shortly after lines in, we had a slinger dolphin. There were several other bites that didn't materialize. Lots of bite offs and short strikes, probably a dozen for the day.

We trolled along the break picking up a few more dolphin, then we finally got the tuna bite we were looking for. It was a double header. The first one came to the side of the boat and did a U turn on me and pulled the hook. The second 40lb class fish wasn't so lucky and into the box it went.

Trolled around some more and then it went off. I'm just getting ready to hook on the planer after checking my bait, when the long rigger comes out of the clip. I pick up the rod lifting the tip into the ready position. TAP, TAP. I knew immediately BILLFISH. I drop back for a 10 count. NOTHING. Ready position again. TAP, TAP. Still there!!! Drop back for a 20 count, still never takes off.

Then a bridge pole goes off and at the same time a dolphin takes my planer bait riding along right behind the boat. I had to put the mystery billfish bite down. Quickly put the dolphin in the box. Then worked on the next fish. Nice WAHOO. Pictured below. Reeled in my long rigger to find some BILL RASH on my Hoo also pictured below.

Finished off the day with a lone gaffer on a Cape Lookout Lures A Bomb Chugger and one more BILLFISH bite on right long, but he just knocked it out of the clip and was gone. It was a slow day for everyone, so I feel good we had as many bites as we did.
