Isn't part of the reason for this forum is to learn? I fished the BFT season for the first time last year. Didn't have a whole lot of a clue as to the particulars. As far as I know I only pissed of one guy and the only reason I know that is because the mate was yelling some crazy crap that I have know Idea what it was. I didn't say anything back and they never got on the radio about it. I learned a lot from a lot of people that chose to help me out and because I asked.

The point is, why do you have to be so negative? It's not like you were giving suggestions to someone in particular, you started the whole post up on your high horse. How is that helpful at all?

You can't learn if you're not on the water. You can't teach if you're not understanding.

We ran the boat down from Manteo a few years ago to give it a shot one day just for fun and went 4/4 done by 8:30. Released em all and had a blast. So yes to answer your question.

A lot of points there well taken. And this forum is to learn, however a lot people get dollar signs in there eyes and go in boats they shouldn't, in conditions they shouldn't, with crews that don't have clue. So I am sharing my experience.

I recommend that instead of going out for the day, stressed over weather you are going to make money to pay off the reels and safety equipment you now own, pissing off other boats/fishermen by getting too close and not even having your radio on so they can ask you to turn off. Instead of participating a everything that makes up a derby style fishery, go have some fun.

That's what I plan on doing this winter.

Yes I have. I've fished alongside some of the best fishermen on the east coast when I worked up there.

As stated, these boards are for those of us who want to learn or share our experiences. "You don't know unless you ask, and don't be ashamed if you need to ask." That is how we learn.

IMO all of those in favor of bashing somebody for trying to obtain answers to questions they don't know, are just plain ignorant and have a fear of someone else being better than them.

Let's not educate anyone the way things should be done so they keep doing it wrong and pissing people off, or God forbid, hurt someone.

Granted, there are guys who don't belong out there, and they are most likely the ones who DON'T ask questions. Who are we to forbid ANYONE to come and play in a public sandbox? If you don't like the circumstances, stay home and shut up for the winter. Or better yet, start your own website and allow only your pals and equals join, and bitch about how bad all those other fisherman are.

I wasn't born with some natural instinct and haven't ever taken a class, but I worked on other boats for three years, until I knew what I was doing. The first day I ran my own boat out there, I knew what licenses I needed. I knew what safety equipement I needed and I knew how to kill one.

I agree that a lot of people have some serious issues with making fishing work. I'm too laid back and enjoy it WAY too much for me to let it not be fun. I'm going to miss the season this year but i sure look forward to getting out there in 09/10!! Will have learned a lot by then so hopefully I'll have some luck!!
Still looking forward to getting some of your jigs Sea Draggin and trying for some of those HUGE AJs you guys caught last year!

Instead, go recreational fishing, have a good time and don't worry about them. Like buffalo's they will be a memory soon enough anyway.

............I know this may not be a popular stance, but other than greed, what reason is there to do it? I'm not running for President next go around, so what the hell. I'm just going to lay it out there Hubris style.

I guess I am a little lost on this post but I'll give you my thoughts since you asked. What does it matter to you or anyone else if another crew doesn't know what permits he needs? What does it matter to you if another crew doesn't know how to get one over the side? I can understand the point about the safety equipment because someone could get hurt saving another crew that was ill prepared without the proper safety equipment. The spot light point is a stretch but I guess it could be a nusiance.

Last year I heard a bunch of bickering because rec boats were out rec fishing for bluefins. It was keeping the commercial guys from making a living and bluefin meat sucks so why kill a fish rec fishing. Or the other popular comment was that rec boats couldn't properly catch and release a bluefin on 50lb gear without doing permanent damage to the fish so they shouldn't fish for them.

If you have the proper permits, know how to get one over the side, have all your safetly gear on board and up to date and can get out of the inlet with your GPS and radar then you should not have to worry about anything else but catching fish and getting home safely. Why burden yourself with worrying about what others have and don't have or know and don't know.

Hmmmm, dare I jump into this thread. Yeah what the hell, last I checked I still had balls! I will be down there on or around the tenth of Dec. to KILL. I run two boats, a cc with a single o/b and a Topaz sportfisher with all the bells. Where do I fall. I'm just hoping that once I restrain my first giant this year one of the know it alls will assist me in walking me through the "how to get my fish over the gunnwale seminar" all while dodging the locals on the water. And I do hope some of you fellas are laughing a little at this post. Everybody that will be out there will be there for one thing mainly, to catch a giant. Some may not be commercial, some may not be very educated but this is no different than what I've seen with all of the other commercial fisheries. Other than dragging nets offshore there will be some boats ruffling the feathers of other boats and so on. You will always have non-commercial guys right in the mix of all the pros. Nothing you can do about it. Suck it up and concentrate on catching more than the next guy. Good luck this season and I hope everyone stays safe!
