went out bright and early on thanksgiving to search for some bluefin tuna in the hudson canyon.
and boy oh boy did we find them!everything we put into the water was oblitherated within minutes we had 3 130s completely spooled one of them was actually smoking;iu never seen a reel dump line so fast before in my life.
we were also spooled on a 50 lrs shiamno while jigging, and it was spooled with 130 spectra so imaginehow much line that was.
we managed to tag and release 28 fish that were in the 80-300 plus pound range and we killed 2 fish that were 290 and 163 pounds.it was an all out slaughter with a scene that rivaled a national geographic episode.i mean freight trains coming out of the water all around the boat and fish actually smashing into the swim platform.
there was an extraordinary amount of long line gear out there as well but i did not notice if there were fish on the gear.but there was not to much boat action as far as commercial or recreatioinal(i guess do to the holiday)even the salty captains must give there crews a holiday break.
there was an obscene amount of whale and dolphin life still in the area and i saw one of the most amazing shark breaches of all times.i would have to say an estimated 800-1000 pound mako came out of the water 15-20 feet exploding on a school of tuna im telling you all it was like watching the making of a national geographic episode up close.anyone who wants numbers
to where we had all the action just leave a reply and i will be sure to get any6 and all information to you as fast as i can so maybe some more of us can get out for some late inning blue fin action.
there should be a window in the next week or so im sure and hopefully others can get out and see this shit first hand becvause it was bonkers.
to all a happy belated thanksgiving and be safe out there.and as soon as i get pics forwarded to me from my brother i will post them so everyone can see just how georgous these fish were the one pic the fish was lit up like a christmas tree when we got it out of the water and were lucky enough to get a quick pic before it darkened out.it was some fish.and remember if anyone is interested in numbers let me know it was somewhat concentrated where we were hooking up consistently.
I hope that's a sign of things to come for us down here in NC. When I lived up north on Long Island back in the early 80's we wouldn't think of tuna fishing past Oct. By know we would have 1/2 dozon or so cod trips in. Thanksgiving was the special Capt. AL cod trip.
That's what I was thinking. He had me right up until he talked about three 130's being cleaned out. Now I'm not buying it. I'd love to be proven wrong.
