    BLUEFIN BREAKS TLD 50

What an amazing day it was offshore Oregon Inlet on Thursday 3.17.2011- The fish were out and so were the Big Boys. We saw pretty much the whos who of East Coast Charter fishing out there wearing the Bluefin out. I have never seen so many Big Tuna up on top of the water swarming and feeding pretty much all day. The troll bite was out producing the jig and it was a poppers dreamland. With only a 2 man crew we could not get too much video footage this time as we just did not have the time with fish ripping off whole spools in mere seconds through out the day. Cow town Oregon Inlet the big fish were going nuts. We hooked and lost a few real big fish. We had things going our way getting the bites, but things were not going our way landing fish. We had a our biggest fish run of the day absolutely smoked it, damn near spooled it, and was strecthed WAY out, and we were directly in the way of two ships bearing right down on us engaged in a fueling operation restricted in ability to maneuver and hailing us on the radio to get out of the way. We had no choice but to steer clear and lost the fish. Next shot we had was here and we just broke out the camera and 20 seconds later had our hands full when the TLD 50 exploded off the rod during the battle with this fish

We miraculously landed the fish and you would not even believe what we went through in doing so, so why post it… What a day my friends. That is why we do what we do. World Class Cow Town Oregon Inlet Bluefin At Its Finest! There should still be a few more weeks left to get in on the action.

    chumslicker,

Better than running it over with a lawn mower! We had a simular event last year. Rod tip broke on fish's last run boatside, nded up parting the line. Quick reaction from one of the guy's had the leader picked up before it slipped overboard. The fish thankfully was done at that point and was led to the waiting gaff. Very memorable day for the fella's that fought the fish they alway's wanted, not to mention an abundance of tuna steaks! Frank

    Graphite

That is the main problem with graphite reels. heavy drags, and big fish. It happens more than people think.

    Knife At GunFight,

Good analogy. But folk's like myself can't afford a different setup for each fish. So far the 50's I use have held up (stand up gear), although I had one last year that I couldn't even slow down. I would hate to think I had to handle a 80w or a 130w all day. Those thing's are big! I guess we just try to average out what we need year round, sometimes the 50's are too big. Frank

The truth is that a great majority of these frame failures have happened while standup fishing in harness, and the TLD 50's are the primary culprit. The TLD 30's have had it happen as well but not as often. The TLD 20's are actually a strogner reel than the TLD 30's by virtue ov having a narrower frame. But there will always be a possibility of busting a graphite frame under a heavy load.

That's why a lot of people have gone to an aftermarket aluminum frame like those made by Tiburon or Willfish. It's also why neither of those companies will sell the larger aftermarket drag plates without also buying their aluminum frames. The extra drag possible with the larger drag plate would be too much for the graphite frames.

    FISH HARD!

    Chris
