Bisbee's Bluewater C.U.P. Championship Sets New World Record
With 56.9 Marlin Caught and Released per Team
Team Wildcatter Wins with Mind-Bending 105 Marlin Released Over Two Days!
CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO, Dec. 3, 2007—The inaugural Bisbee’s Bluewater C.U.P. Championship tournament took place November 29th through December 1st in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and went straight into the record books with a phenomenal catch average of 56.9 marlin per team.
“This was as true of a championship event the industry has ever seen” said tournament promoter Wayne Bisbee. “The teams competing made tournament fishing history, and the numbers themselves prove that these are some of the best teams in the world—which is what a championship is all about”.
Ten teams were invited to the Championship which was the finale to the Bisbee’s Bluewater C.U.P. Series, a team oriented series that included three tournaments in California and three in Mexico running from July through October. Three teams were not able to attend. The all-release event was filmed by an independent production crew and featured a unique “Pole Position” scoring method which awarded starting points to teams based on their overall success throughout the Series.
On the first day of fishing seven teams, on boats ranging from a 33’ Contender to a 72’ Donzi, hit the ocean like a hurricane heading northwest to the Finger Banks on the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula. The bite took off late morning and remained steady throughout the day, which was overcast and rainy with strong winds and high seas. There are no boundaries in this event and several teams were outside of radio range, so the true numbers weren’t known until that evening as teams turned in their scorecards at the Baja Cantina. By the end of the day 158 striped marlin releases had been recorded.
The weather laid down a bit on the second and final day of fishing and, based on their experience from the previous day, the teams were prepared with extra bait and tackle. As the shotgun flare hit the sky everyone again headed northwest, and again the true numbers weren’t known until that evening. When the final scorecard was turned in everyone sat back in shock as they counted an unbelievable 240 releases for a total of 398 striped marlin released by seven teams over two days of fishing.
Team Wildcatter from Wyoming won the Championship with 105 striped marlin releases and were crowned THE Champions of Billfishing. The second runner up was Contender One with 86 striped marlin and the first runner up was Tiger Spirit who released 97 striped marlin. A complete list of teams and the overall final standings are included at the end of the press release.
Everyone congratulated each other with true camaraderie, and the event ended with on-camera team interviews followed by dinner and the Awards Presentation at the Baja Cantina.
