Can i ask you guys something? Why the HELL are you still using wire?
Jay what do you use? i use wire or cable what else works?
Paul i thought the sight of you at the gunnel was enough to scare the blues into quiet submission??
I know you asked jay but i see he is offline right now.. I know he has been using mono with good success.
There are also some commercial fishermen who has used mono for sharks with no problem..
I am fishing both tourneys this weekend and giving it a shot with mono and circles.. seems to be the new thing!! or new heard about thing!
i would not trust mono straight to the hook. even with a C-hook you never know how they hook up and the slightest touch of tooth to line you are done. also abrasion on skin will wear down line in no time during a tough fight.
as for hooks>> i have never had a problem with inexpensive mustad shark hooks. why use fancy marlin hooks when most get cut off with a fish. i do not feel the need to wrestle with big blue P.O.S. for a $1.00 hook. they bit it they can have it!!!just my .02 Chuckfish
circles are about 50 cents a piece for the mustads i would be using.. and 530lb extra hard momoi i dont think will rub to much.. teath might be a problem but if you use cable to a hook it is just as bad imo!
relax deep makos sre still south they will be moving up any day now this is is a good body of them off oc md. and cm nj. water temp still 65 degrees.
Absolutely not.
Have you ever handled 530 lb. mono? That stuff is thick. This isn't an issue of playing the fish, this is getting them to bite.
The wire/cable emits a weak electronic "pulse" in the water which sharks dislike intensely.
Ever watch them come up to a trim tab, take a nibble, then tear ass out of there? Exactly.
Mako's are probably the worst out of the bunch for this since they are programmed to pick up the pulses from distressed fish in the water. They are more high strung "wired" shark.
The last time i fish mono, the radio consensus was that the fleet off about 5 miles couldn't buy a bite.
And us?
3 run off's within the first hour of fishing and this guy hung at the dock. Went about 250.
You can see the mono hanging out of the mouth.
Jay- do you crimp the hook to the mono leader or a short wire trace. how does it hold up if the hook does get inside? you make some good points and i may try this out.
