Blue marlin - location re temperature breaks query

Here's a question for everyone but especially the guys fishing the canyons and the Carolinas:

In your experience do you find that blue marlin hookups tend to come in different areas relative to temperature breaks than tuna or white marlin? For instance when you find the main tuna concentrations, possibly on the edge of the break, do blue marlin tend to be right in with them or do they hang say 3-5 miles off the break on the warmer side of the temp edge? How common is it to get a blue marlin hookup on the cooler side of the edge? Is it most common to hook up a blue in the vicinity of bait (skipjacks, small yellowfin peanut dorado, mackerel balls etc) or do most of the hookups come out of the blue (no pun intended). Do larger blues (say 400 lb and above) show up in different types of scenarios/locations to smaller fish?

    Interested to hear your experiences.

    Regards

    P.

Always good to see your threads P.
I predominantly fish NC, so I will limit my discussion to this area. Before I start and someone tells us about a Blue one they caught in 30 fathoms, I know they come in the mud some and have got a few there my self. By far, the majority of Blue Marlin are found ( notice I said found) a good ways past the typical "break" in NC. In general, this break is the Gulf Stream and follows roughly just inside the 50-100 fathom line. (very short distance in the Hatteras area) The Blue one's tend to favor the deeper waters outside the "break", especially in the spring. Water is just too dang cold until about May to venture inside. As the Spring progresses, the water warms, and the inshore water clears, the Blue's do venture inside more and more. This is especially true when there is good eddy pushing clear water with counter rotation. About mid July, the water gets so hot that the Break is just too warm and it is actually cooler, and more comfortable further offshore.
This being said, many a slob Blue has been hooked during May gorging on YFT way inside the break.
Not sure this answers your question, but these have been my observations in NC

temp has a great to do with it. but all things being the same except depth, the majority seem to come from 500 fathoms plus.

It is my understanding that current is very important also off the nc coast. With little or no current being the best.
