No wise comment here. Marlin are thriving all over the world and there is no problem with taking a few for the table. There is no limit in the US and anyone that wants to bring one home can't be condemed for it. I'd love to see more marlin being harvested instead of tuna. And if you've tried Marlin before you know what i'm talking about. They have amazing meat.

    its a fight

commercial guys are killing the hell out of'em down here, we are tryng to stop, or slow them down by making live bait illegal, ya thats right they are putting live baits down there long lines with j-hooks, floating blues, blacks and sailfish as far as the eye can see its BS$%^&@$%&@&$%

government supports it why?? we in costa rica are supposed to be the leaders in eco-groovey movements. Goin backwards i am afraid!!!

please put all this crap in magazines and where ever else we can expose this evil

that new movie about shark fins is going to turn some heads finally, i think it will bleed over to the billfish debate, i hope

thanks for your concern and we are fighting but they have the legislators in their pockets like always

this is ironic Mike. The circle hook data from down there is used as a model for the rulings up here and you have a commercial industry down there you are feeding. I guess it is screwed up every where. You know farmed raised catfish are tasty. The longliners will save tons of money on fuel costs and gear repairs pursuing that interest. To them a fillet is a fillet. Jack the price up and convince the world it is better than marlin. There are many ways to supply the demand of fillet. The restaurants selling the "marlin" dinner have seasoned it to the max any way. Heck a sneaker would taste good at that rate. It is all in the marketing ploy. Mike keep us posted on the updates

Boy that's really sad. I wonder if they have quantified the total income that is generated by eco-friendly travellers and fishermen who come to those waters for the simple fact that the perception of Cost Rica is of a responsible government and fishery. If that perception changes, I would think that the $$ coming into the country from these travellers and fishermen would drop considerably. Hopefully they do the right thing.

The only commercially harvestable Blue Marlin are from the Pacific , Atlantic blues are protected from commercial sales in the U.S., and the recreational catch can not exceed 250 fish, as a rule from ICCAT. As I understand it , it is legal only in the pacific because the government does't want to tell the native Hawiians they can't eat a fish they've been eating for centuries and because hawaii is part of the U.S. it has to apply to all citizens on the island or mainland.

And ICCAT does such a great job regulating all fisheries.

There are more than enough marlin to commercially catch a few. I think most people don't realize just how many marlin there are out there.
