    Blackfin Tuna ID

I am trying to get better at distinguishing the difference between Blackfin and Yellowfin tunas (especially with both being caught out of OI right now).

So far I have read that the easiest way to identify a blackfin is to look for a larger eye and also a shorter pec fin.

How do you all quickly tell the difference between a blackfin and a blt yellowfin when they're coming to the gaff?

Does anyone have some good live pics to show as examples? I only found at the dock catches after some searching.

Below is a picture of Capt. Jay's recent catch on Bite me to perhaps help with the discussion. Nice work by the way, hope you don't mind me using the picture!

If the size is close to the YFT limit. Look at the pec and **** fins. From what I have found out a blackfin the same size as a yellowfin will fight and dig a lil harder. Eyeball does seem to be bigger.

BTH, thanks for the quick reply...you mentioned to: "If the size is close to the YFT limit. Look at the pec and an@l fins."

What specifically are you looking for? Size, color?

    Thanks again.

If the tuna in question gets in range and it's size looks under 27" I will take some wraps and sling 'em over the gunnel/transom. This way no harm if it is juvey yft. Dehook and toss back. Blackfin....in the box it goes.

If it looks like maybe 27", before the gaff shot I take a quick look at the fins to verify. This would be tuna fishing NC style with windons. Over the shoulder leader to the reel and wrap just before gaffing.

Under 27" is always a Blackfin.

Here is a pic of one of each.
