    black marlin surf fishing

anybody else catch the show last night on the outdoor network
one guy hooked and had his reel stripped by one fish, then a second angler hooked and landed a fish that looked 200-250lbs
    Black marlin
all the while standing on a rock surf fishing.

    very cool stuff.

apparently they where fishing on a bay close to the edge of the reef, where bait fish congregate and the fish move inshore to feed
first time I have ever heard of this happening

Didn't catch the show, but when I was in Maui the other year bill fishing, the captain said he used to marlin fish off the rocks with kites. Caught one, had to scale down a couple hundred feet of rocks, and climb back up with it, said he did it once and will never do it again.

Fishing for yellowfin tuna and marlin off the rocks is pretty popular on the leeward side of Oahu. When I was there last summer one guy hauled a 200+lb yft off the rocks. When he got it close he took a .22 pistol and shot it twice in the head, jumped in the water, tied a rope to the tail and 4 guys pulled it up on the rock platform about 3 feet above the water. Hawaiians are some gnarly dudes.
