I wondered the same thing. I think the answer may be that the newspapers didn't get it right. I don't know that's the case but it's a likely possibility.

There are currently four 32' Blackfins up there with the documented name "Black Magic". That's just the documented ones.

Apparently they were mixing up data on different boats. Some called it a charter boat, others didn't.

Shoot, my 32' Blackfin is from up there and was named Black Magic before I purchased it and refurbished it.

I think thats part of the problem. Its not the news that gets it wrong, its the process. They dont have a clue. Read what you wrote......why would the coast guard get it mixed up? If you have an e-pirb, and it gets activated.......WTF is the mix up? Only in the govt do they need a second opinion. I hope I never need them, except for the fact they have a federal budget and I dont......I can walk circles around those dumb-bells. I still want an answer, why not just turn on the e-pirb? If your in trouble like that, it makes sense.

Arn't EPIRBs required in offshore waters? If it is not a law yet then it should be! That piece of technology should be mandatory to carry on any offshore fishing vessel.. YOU MUST have a lifevest to save your life, but you are not required to bring along the only device that could save the Taxpayers thousands and thousands of dollars in blown USCG search party money. How much does it cost to run a CG Huey? 20g's an hour? Plus countless hours of maintenance then after in the hanger? If they had the correct gear on board, the USCG would have saved tons of resources and the crew would have been home eating campbells soup a lot sooner. I think guys like that should be fined. Buy an EPIRB THEN a shimano 50 wide.....not the other way around. my 2cents
