Bimini/ Cat Cay Giant Tuna Who???

Been decades since I worked this fishery. Figure though I'll be in that neck of the woods for pretty much the prime month and may well give em a shot. Wondering if we have any members that have worked em in recent years?

Thought I remember someone on this site posting last May and June about picking a few that way but cant remember who it was...

For a long time I didn't see any in that area but the last few crossings from Gun to Chub I have seen a few on the flats. Not in the numbers of yester year but enough that we could probably get to bait a couple pods here and there... Would love to find others working it and maybe do some info swapping...

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe it was on FS forum too...But I could be wrong...The boat was off Cat for a month or so...I believe they caught 2 fish within a couple of days...One went 600 and the other close to 900...The pods are fewer nowadays...plus, you never know when they move through...Its all a crap shoot...If you have the time to kill, gas to burn and solid crew, give it a try...Ya might just get lucky!!!

I remember talking to an old salty dawg as a child off Cat...He was strictly targeting the pods in a commercial ballyhoo style boat...high tower...one chair...one 14/0 fin-nor reel...heavy rod with dacron...and a split tail mullet for bait...He said it was his last yr targeting bec. the # were simply not there...And that was 20+ yrs ago.

The last one I stroked over there was early eighties... No monster but good fish of about 500. I went to get a bottle of champagne to celebrate, came back and the natives had cut it up and basically stole it. I complained and all I got back was "Dat fish property of da Bahamas".
I just gave up after that but the last few round trip crossings from Gun to the pocket I have seen them on the return run. Not the parking lots full of volkswagons like the golden days. Just onsies and twosies but enough to get me all tingly. Regret not having a bait ready to go on one of those runs cause I was lined up right.
If I get one I'm gonna let it go. Just would love that rush one more time and hell, I'm there for the duration anyway...

    Those were the Days!

Could it really have been the 70's?? Besides catching them tossing mullet or Macks out and dragging them in front of a school of what looked like giant oil drums! we were blind trolling the edge on an overcast day and caught a double header! Let mine go (est over 800 lbs) boated dad's over 900#'s at the old big game club! Boy the Complete Angler was fun at that age!!

Angler burnt down and ruins remain. Bimini a shell of what it once was. I'm gonna be there a month... May as well make the most of it... Oh wouldn't be nice to see just one more time...

Of all the fisheries that have come and go over they years, this is the one I would have loved to have seen most. I can't imagine seeing a school of those beasts swimming in those crystal clear shallow waters.

Those who bore witness... consider yourselves lucky. Maybe we'll see it again!

Bart had a good year last year as well as Nick... Think Alex gave em a pass... Got some good intel on the side as to where they were and what conditions they were best in... Rusty as hell after all these years but I'll give it a shot or two. Something different.
