    BIGEYE up in CANADA....

    HI:
They had a decent bite up in NOVA SCOTIA,NEWFOUNDLAND. Remember, AS a NON Canadian, you can't keep BFT. I'm NOT SURE if it's the same for EYEBALLS. I'll try and find out what the rules will be for 2010.
Most of the EYEBALLS came on GREEN/YELLOW GM type lures with YELLOW TAPE OVER THE TRI-BEADS and the HOOK.
    COOL .
The other EYEBALLS came on a RED/BLACK GM type with a CLEAR head and SILVER TRI-BEADS inside that head. I made a bunch of them for some guys up there . Strangely, also for the Carolina guys(?) Maybe they like that color combo for other fish too. I know HOO'S like that color combo.
No, I don't use wire up inside. I found that I got more hits/hookups on mono. YEAH, I got "bit off' a few times, but what the HECK, guys, I got more hits and more fish in the box.
Even though I love jets for EYEBALLS, I didn't do that well on 'em this year. Years past, I had at leas 2 in my spread . I ALWAYS put 'em on the same side as my prop was turning.
I love the middle wighted ones. To me ober 6 ounces was too big for my fishing.
I'll be at the Raleigh show in January. PLEASE stop by and say hello. I sure would like to faces to all the names I see here.
Any one interested in the SAVANNAH show? I'll be there too. Last years show was super. Lots of good info from lots of local captains. The discount PRICES on new boats was pretty good too.
By the way, a 6-9 inch squid sizes on the squid bar worked well. Yeah. you just gotta love those bars for EEVVEERRYYTTHHIINNGG.

Bigeye would be any spreader 9" and over. Squids and GMs seem to be the ticket. Run everything in a tight pattern.
I was out there 8.8 and if I remember correctly it was really hot an heavy a couple of days before that. That Sat there must have been 200 + boats fishing the 100 sq. My next trip out was the 16th and the bite had slowed considerably so we fished the Toms. I also was out there on 7.28 but we were north at the dip and fishtales and I don't remember hearing anything about the big eyes on the radio. If anybody was catching them they were keeping quiet about it.

saturday august 8th was an incredible day at the 100 square that I will not soon forget

there were definitely 200 boats from MA to NJ and beyond

we did not get one. we fished from sunup til about 3pm and saw no fewer than three boats hooked up at all times all day

i think that most boats got a shot that day

    we fished it all:

    green machine spreader bars
    hoos in jets
    rainbow squid spreader bars
    dark squid spreader bars
    tuna clones
    cedar plugs

    slow, medium, quick

    short, medium, long

i dont know what we did wrong that day?!

probably has something to do with the saying 'you just had to run them over'

we could not get them in our spread to eat

needless to say, we are still second guessing ourselves.

Was there any reason why they were there? - unusual amount of bait to hold them in the area or some kind of oceanographic feature like a current eddie, etc?

    thanks

They were breeding in that area for about 2 weeks.
