let it ride- I've targeted bigeyes for 2 seasons out of NC and haven't caught one yet. The advice that I recieved from the OI guys is to fish a lot and hope you get lucky.

Some great insight from guys who really get after them...thanks for the great info.

It's funny how you say, "when the come up, the come UP". Last year in say early June they were around the south side of the norfolk Canyon. We went out and stayed deep for probably the first 4 hours of the day. We pulled big Ilander (expresses) and big pushers, as well as big spreaders bars. We managed a couple of yellowfins and mahi out deep but no big eye bites. We later managed some more yellowfins in 40 fathoms but I talked to a friend who was out there that morning (in the deep). Close to us but not within visual. They had an 8 for 8 on 100-130 pound Eyeballs. Said they came in and just destroyed the spread. He definitely drove over them and had a big spread out. It was their only bite of the day. I would have loved to have seen that...

As for OI, I've asked a couple of the charters down there (while fishing with them) and they desribed it like others...find the good marks and pound the hell out of em' til they come up. One boat (Pointrunner) mentioned putting out 2 or 3 big squid bars on the flats but the rest medium ballys. Another boat (Fishin' Frenzy) said, nah...we don't do anything different. If we get over em' and stay there we will get our bites. For sure, those OI guys rely on their two squid chain teasers and 10 single bally baits for day in day out no matter what...and it works for them and they know how to fish it. Interesting the way it can differ so much from north to south. I'm sure bait/forage in each area has a lot to do with it.

Again, thanks for the info. Always nice to know what should work out deep for the next time I'm able to be out there looking...

Great thread here guys. Big Eyes are at the top of my list, and I hope to be lucky enough to fight one some day. I'm going to tatoo this thread on me somewhere so I can study it.
