Big YFT Bite - Outer Banks

One of my best customers tells me there is a hot bite out of Oregon Inlet going right now with 100# plus YFT and Big Eyes. The thinking is that these are new fish that crossed over from the Med (just a theory). I am hoping they somehow end up off OCMD. I was told they are catching double digit YFT per day.

Check out the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center's website. It's been an epic past week. Can't believe the number of eyeballs this year.

The Bite is On in NC

    Oregon Inlet Fishing Reports:
    Picture from Aug 22, 2008:

    August 25
Offshore good dolphin fishing everywhere. In some locations there were concentrations of sailfish.. One boat caught and released 8. There were 25 sailfish caught and released along with 7 white marlin. Inshore good spanish mackerel fishing and tailor bluefish. Triggerfish and false albacore were cught by one morning trip, king mackerel were caught in the afternoon. An open boat caught 3 cobias, king mackerel and spanish mackerel in the morning and 2 cobias and spanish mackerel in the afternoon. Miss Oregon Inlet caught croakers and sea mullet.

    August 23
The last few days have seen a remarkable change in offshore fishing. It resembles a sharp seasonal exchange in species from summer to fall. Lots of yellowfin tuna were caught today and bigeyes. The yellowfins were generally big with one hitting 109 pounds. Several citations were caught one boat had two weighing 76 and 73 pounds. That boat had a total of 15 tunas. There were at least 14 bigeyes caught weights ranged from 97 to 170 pounds each. There was a separation in locations between dolphin and tuna. Two boats that fished for marlin caught and released blue marlins and returned with around 30 dolphin each. Inshore there was good spanish mackerel and bluefish. Some king mackerel were caught. An open boat caught 3 cobias and sheepshead. A popular fishing area, the beach acrost from Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, accessed through ramp 4 opened to the South past the North Point. Pictures were taken and will be posted

    August 22
First boaqt in from offshore had an outstnding catch of yellowfin tuna. The biggest yellowfin weighed 79 pounds. The offshore boats that followed all had outstanding yellowfin tuna catches. The yellowfins included a good many in the over fifty pounds class. A pair of bigeyes were also caught The biggest weighed an evan 100 pounds. It is good to see so many big yellowfin tunas. Five white marlin and two sailfish were caught and released. Inshore an open boat caught speckled trout and bluefish. Another open boat on an all day trip caught bluefish, flounders, speckled trout and a red drum. Miss Oregon Inlet caught flounders.

    August 21:
Offshore the only boat that went specifically for tuna had a wonderful day catching a limit of nice size yellowfins. The party consisting of Ken Miller, Walter Ray Meads, Will Tankard, James Eure, Randy Wilson and Tray Byrum all from Elizabeth City. These sportmen were enthusiastic about their trip. The ocean was choppy. Thenpresenvce of the tuna was given away by birds and the calmness of the water over the school. They were feeding on squid.I got a call telling me that three more boats two that were concentrating on marlin another bottom fishing all got some of those tuna and their way in. Inshore boats caught tailor bluefish and spanish mackerel.

Thanks for posting Keith. I'm heading down to OBX tomorrow night. Sounds like the tuna bite slowed yesterday, but hopefully it picks back up.
