Chances are they were bluefins, however, he claims in his post that he caught blue fins and big eyes, so he appears to be able to tell the difference. Remember that although unlikely, its the ocean and fish have tails. There have been bluefins caught in the surf, jack crevalle in the bay, and tarpon caught in New Jersey. You never know!

Maybe they didn't read the rules
Just like you can't catch whites inshore of the canyons

Thats right anything is possible. either last year or the year before there was a large Bluefin that was in a tidal creek in nc and the guy only had light tackle in his 16 ft. boat and he drove over to the fish and gaffed it. Unfortunately his BF permit was for his larger boat and not the skiff

Over the past few years out of OCMD the fleet has been running out to the canyons to get the bite but with the cost of fuel this year it forces most of the fleet to fish inshore and its amazing what can can happen when you don't run right over the fish.

I dont know about that...the trunk get hit harder than a girl on roofies at a frat house For all the the guys running right over them to get to the canyons, all us mid range guys pound the hell out of those mid range structures.

Mr. Pino- I know of at least one swordie to come from 30 fathoms- Hard Head caught one at the wash lumps a few years ago. Wait a minute, come to think of it, I know of several caught at the dog by boats chunking over the years.

I will be interested to see how this one pans out, I have heard of bigeye in 50 fathoms, never heard of any shallower, but like alot of folks said, these things have tails, and there are not any fences out there.

The interesting thing about this- for years the world record bigeye was held by a fish caught out of OC- 350 or 375 I think. That fish was listed as having been caught in 20 fathoms. Dale Timmons took the pic, and even he has some doubts now as to whether it might have been a bluefin, and misidentified.

Will beinteresting when we see the pics. I hope they are bigeyes- will make for an awesome story
