    Big Eye & Bluefin

I found this picture from yesterday and just wanted to share... I don't think there are too many pictures that have a big eye and bluefin of similar size side by side like this.

There have been a couple of big eyes caught mixed in with the bluefins the past week out of Oregon Inlet and the Point Runner with Capt Danny were lucky enough to catch one along with yellowfin. Nice tuna slam! I got this picture off of his site.

Obvious physical differences for me are body shape, second dorsal, notch in caudal, hard to tell length of pectoral from picture, color of finlets, color of anal fin -maybe some more people will chime in with differences....

Big Eye was #225 and the Bluefin was #181

Congrats! Looks like Spring is just around the corner. OI & Hatteras have had some good days on the BF for the past month according to the reports I have been reading.

What a fine Big eye! Cool comparison to a similar size bluefin.
    Thanks for posting this picture.

    Thanks for posting Tuna Teaser.

It can be tricky making the distinction this time of year. Here are a couple more pictures for comparison.
"Both fish are about the same length but the eye is 45 pounds heavier. The picture does not show the pectoral fin very well, but the big eye pec fin is much longer and reaches to the base of the second dorsal fin. You can see the longer slot along the side. The finlets on the big eye are much brighter yellow with a dark outline while the bluefin's finlets are pale in comparison. And finally, bluefin tuna have a notch in the center of the tail. Look closely and you will see the big eye has no notch in the tail. "

Thanks for adding to this thread capt. I was curious from that picture if the bigeye pecs actually did reach the base of the second dorsal because they don't look like it in the picture. I guess it's just deceiving...

I see what you mean, TT

This photo angle has a little better view of the longer pectoral fin but still does not do justice.
