BFT Paydirt on Canyon Runner 8/20-21
Went out on Canyon Runner on make up trip behind the cold front and nasty seas. Capt Mark made the right call going for the BFT bite off the Claw rather than risk the long run and slow bite in the canyons. With six guys onboard as anglers, and me drawing the shortest straw for angler #6, the 1st mate Greg and 2nd mate Pete are good at convincing anglers to "tag team" the fish so more people get shots to reel in fish in case the bite is not going strong. And so we came off plane around 1 PM in the area, started the troll in earnest around 1:30 PM and in just over an hour the first fish came tight on the WTFB naked hoo, and 20 minutes later a 57 inch fish got measured and released. In just over another hour we came tight on fish #2 on the WTFB naked hoo. The tag team concept was working well, we basically had two anglers per fish going.
We set up for the evening chunk around 6 PM, and the first fish came on at 6:30 PM, a second one just before sunset at 8:10 PM. At night my brother and I caught a 7 ft tiger shark at midnight and BFT #5 at 3 AM. Then with all hands on deck for the morning chunk, we got 11 good bites, coming tight on 10 of them and landing 8. From 5:15 Am when the bite started until 8:15 when it shut down, we had almost non-stop action with a single or double hook-up. One fish with a bad attitude took us around the boat several times and hung out there for about 40 minutes. The two that got away used the bottom of the boat and props to make their escape. So, for the whole trip we went 13 for 15 on the BFTs and 1 for 1 on the sharks. All the BFT's were in the 56-62 inch range, or about 70 to 82 lbs. The Capt and mates were first class guys, worked hard the entire time, and I learned alot from their organization and approach to fishing, and the way they waste no time re-rigging and staying on the bite when it materializes. It was the best tuna trip and boat I've ever fished on, and I would recommend them to anyone who is new to tuna, or anyone who needs some tips for improving their catch rate and success. This is the Lobster Claw that is 80 miles SE of Manasquan and about 18 miles inshore of the Spencer canyon.
