    Best Yellowfin water temps?

I was wondering what the best water temps are for yellowfin off OCMD. We are thinking about keeping the Red Eye in OC for a few more months and taking the family out catching tuna instead of heading south when the billfish move out. I've been raised on marlin fishing so I don't know much about tuna except that they like spreader bars. I just wanted to know how long the yft's would be out there while we're here for the fall. Thanks

There were some YFT caught near the pork products yesterday. Generally speaking there will be some chances at YFT for the next month and a half. I have caught them all the way through december here in years past, but right now we are at a low point in YFT cycles.

Another problem is that we don't have any volume of boats fishing and looking for them. Yes there are not alot around, but when every internet addicted armchair fisherman chooses to say tuna fishing sucks, i am not going, it spreads like wildfire and all of the boats sit at the dock- who would know if there are any out there or not????

1 boat went tuna fishing in 20 to 30 fathoms yesterday and caught a handful of yft and bft- imagine if we had a fleet looking?

Oh, and to answer the original question, I have caught YFT in water down to about 62 degrees in the fall. Last October i caught a wahoo in 67 degree water on the bone.

Another thing to keep in mind this time of year, alot of times you have to weed through the false albies to catch the tunas and hoos. Don't get complacent about having a gaff close at hand- I have had days where I hve fallen into such a routine catching albies that i miss out on a hoo or a tuna that was part of a cover up of albies.

I had a captain out of OI tell me that he has never met a YF that could read water color or a YF that had a thermometer in his mouth and that's the truth. We have caught them in some of the ugliest green water to the the prettiest blue water and in temps from 62-84 degrees....

Under no circumstances should anyone go tuna fishing this weekend. I've never seen it so bad. Stay home, cut the grass, fix the porch light, anything but tuna fishing. Do not go to the temperature break at the 30 fa line.

Dont take it personal Capt, I love OC, I fish out of OC all summer, but if your looking for tuna its not first on the list, When is the last time you seen 18 YFT lines up behind a boat in OC, I know it happens about once a year, and his question was about water temp, but also about when to move south for tuna, my advice stands, if you want tuna, follow the marlin south, you'll hit the yellows right around the 570 off OI

How many conversations I've had about chunkin and what happened there. Used to be our staple but I haven't brought out the chunk king in a few years. How did the Parking Lot get its name? U just don't see it anymore.
