I'm going to a wedding in Bermuda in July. I've looked at a few charters online and have seen that several of them say the "catch" is the property of the boat or captain. Is this normal for Bermuda? I don't intend on trying to bring fish back to the states on the plane, but if I'm paying $1500 for a charter I should retain control of the fish. Any recommendations on a charter?

Third for James. It is pretty common for them to keep the catch there. Fuel prices are so high they need to make the extra money. Cost of living is through the roof there too.

When I fished with James he let us take some wahoo back with us. But good luck getting a rest. to cook it for you. I ended up cooking back at our apt..

All the fishermen in Bermuda are pleasant, not keeping the catch is normal, fuel is high, and,so is the cost of living but all of them most likley will let you take some catch to have cooked at a rest, or at your place to stay a Heiniken will get ya a long way there, Bermuda is a great place to fish in july,Bluemarlin wahoo and yellowfin.

Thanks for the info. This is a destination wedding. All of the guests except my wife and I are taking a cruise to the island. My wife and I are flying in so we can actually enjoy the island and go on a charter. Does anyone kow if they do make-up charters or should I plan to pay for it myself?

Hi, Just thought I would wade in here as I live in Bermuda. As you have heard, fuel prices are very high. Diesel is anywhere from about $6 per gallon to $6.5 per gallon currently. Cost of living is generally very high so the fishermen here sell their catch to offset the high cost of operating. All fish caught commercially and sold in Bermuda are caught on rod/reel for the most part so the charter boats are also a key part of the commercial catch. However, almost every single Captain is generous and will share a portion of the catch with their clients. The nicer and more courteous the guests are the more willing the Captains will be to share fish. I assume a nice tip helps in this regard as well.
There are a bunch of high quality boats and Captains on the island so you should have a good choice. Although times are tough for the tourist trade, July is prime time for marlin so you should book ahead... especially as there are two large tournaments that just about every boat will be fishing. July can also be ok for YFT but Marlin are definitely the main attraction.
PM me if you would like more information.

So if you are on vaction in Bemuda and you catch a 50 YFT how much of that meat are you going to use? If you catch 5 tuna ?

Do you really need more than 1 meal's worth of fish?

    Bert,
I'm just not used to the way they do things. Like I said I couldn't bring the fish back on the plane and I can't store it in the hotel. To me it would be logical that I would be able to distribute my catch they way I wanted after paying $1300. It's all good, that's the way they do it and I'm fine with it. I just wanted to know what the story was. I would probably go for Blue Marlin and not worry about what to do with the "catch".

Trust me you will have a good chance for a fine blue marlin, and they are the nicest and most fun people you will meet, be careful on the scooters the road rash is hatefull there.
