    Bent butt question

I currently have 50's and 80's on stand up stright butts, we fish out of a rocket launcher. This season I am installing a chair. My quesion is if I change the 80's to a bent butts can I fish them out of the chair or will they be too short. Basically can they be used for both stand up and chair fishing?

The next bite on a jig.
Joe Shute carries a 50 class bent butt that is 2" longer than a normal stand up bent. It fits in a regular hold and should work with you chair, but still allow you to do stand up if you want.

Depends on the chair, some have a gimble that can be flipped over for the shorter butts.

We use shorty bent butts on all of our heavy stand up gear. If an angler does need to get in the chair, we just flip the gimbal around as if we were using a straight butt The rod tips are pretty short that we use and they do not reach the corner so it takes more boat handling, but it gives the angler a chance to sit down and rest if need be.

Heavy conventional chair rods are usually something like 7' 6" (don't remember exactly, but that's right or close) and stiff as hell. The purpose of the long rods is so that the rod tips clear the stern corners and don't cause corner break-offs or ones on boats that have swimsteps. That size rod and a conventional bent butt will clear 13' beams and 14' in a pinch. Those radical looking chairs with the bent pedestals aren't for cool looks. They are for broader beamed boats, where they can be swung to the right or left in order to, again, clear the corners.

    Cool

I had some pretty short stand up bent butts on 50's. That thing flew out of the chair when hit by a YFT. Caught the rig when it hit the covering board before going in the drink. I never tried it again.

The make some spacers for your reg rodholders that drop in to give the smaller butts something to rest in

I have a short 5' 6" 80 to 130 custom stand up rods that we use for stand-up fishing for the bluefins. When I commercial fish I switch the straight stand up butts with full sized bent butts and you can fish them out of a chair, or as we, do out of gunnel mounted swivel rod holders. You should not have any problem fishing them out of a chair.

most guys use longer bent butts and longer rods from the chair.
standup is usually done with short bent or straight and shorter rods.
guys do use the longer bent for standup, if they have to. but it is not the ideal setup for the job
