Heres my rundown on the Barta. First and foremost, you get that many people with that many kids and it should border on chaos.....not here, kudos to the staff and volunteers at this tournament. Very well done and it seems to get better each year.
I have read this board for about a year now and have learned much from many of you and fished with several of you. Thanks for being willing to share your knowledge.
Friday - Run out with the Seawitch and Mighty Mo to our chosen grounds. Lines in, Impulse reports a hookup, we hookup 2mins later. I think I call it in, wrong channel (what a stupid I am) racing to get the first release with my daughter on the rod. Overun her, line slack, fish jumps, fish gone........daughter not happy(see pic) , call in we jumped her off................some guy says wrong channel, see previous parenthesis. Hey, lets just lock her in on ch72. 20mins pass, we have another come in right after the Seawitch releases a sail. Sam hooks her up, put my daughters boyfriend on the rod, first time saltwater angler catches his first saltwater fish, release a sail and we're on the board.
Fishing slows up a bit, we box a few mahi. Had a few other first timers on the boat, wanted them to catch a fish or two right? Well, ole cap see's a half deflated raft thinks its a good idea.........three passes, 18 mahi bites, 18 wasted ballyhoos and 2 mahi in the box (damn circle hooks) informed by Sam we are really low on bait
no problem....call the Seawitch, how about floating me a couple packs of mediums. We get the bait along with somebodies boxers and some socks that smell like ass! (Note to self, fill the bait freezer) We miss one more sail and fish out the day...run back in a solid downpour dont have to wash the boat, perfect end to the day.
Saturday - Weather forecast, ugly, weather reality, nice! Lost most of my crew Friday night (due to forecast) and scrambled to find replacements, done. Slap the alarm clock at 4:30am, stoked right? Nope, back to sleep, get a wakeup call at 6:00am from one of my replacement crew wondering where in the hell I'm at and why is there no extra bait on the boat! Yeah, about that bait.......... No problem, we can make it to the spot EASILY by 8:00am...............OK 8:13. Late lines in, there she is! Hook her up at 8:34, release 8:39. Miss another sail just before 10:00am, check to see if we had the 1st release. Confirmed! Catch us one more and we'll just head for the hill. Starting to look ugly to the SW. Capt Tred calls us out early, we pick up at 12:00 and call it a tournament.
We go 3 for 5 on what I thought were solid hookups and release 2 sails and completely whiff 2.
Guess they're all right, better to be lucky than good! Gimme all the flack I deserve, but the following critiques have been taken.
1- Captain Sleepyhead
2 - "Maybe they should give you a marlin trophy with an alarm clock inside"
3 - "Hey AB, might want to use that baitfreezer for bait instead of Klondike bars"
Any new stuff is welcome and deserved.
