    Ballyhoo help

Normally I fish I bottom fish off shore in West Central Florida but I do head to the West Coast of Mexico a couple of times a year and troll there for marlin, dorado, and yft.

Heading back to Mexico (Manzanillo area) next month and although I usually just use lures with an occasional skanky native mullet thrown back to a marlin or sail I am planing on taking some frozen ballyhoo with me. When I was fishing this same area back in January another fishermen had brought some hoo and was doing quite well with them. There are a million videos on how to rig them out there but I have seen some Sea Witch type rigs with the little spring thing in them. Can Anyone out there tell me how to use the little spring thing and how you hook up the ballyhoo with this device???

The best advice I can give you about that lil spring thing is DO NOT use it. Take some time and learn to rig with monel. THose lil spring thigs should be outlawed IMHO. Wire rigged baits just swim better to me. If you invest the time and effort in learning to rig with wire you will be rewarded with a better swimming bait.... and once you get the hang of it you can rig one with wire as fast as you can with a baitspring.

you hook your ballyhoo, stick your pin up through the bottom jaw and push it up through the top jaw, then simply spin the spring on tightly.

its certainly not the best way to do it

straight rigged monel with no pin will give you the best swimming ballyhoo

Zummie, I'm in Tampa as you know and rig lots and lots of Hoo's a year. I'd be more than willing to show you how to rig Ballyhoo on both Circle hooks and J-hooks as well as dredge baits, strip baits, spanish macks, etc. Springs are not the answer to rigging a good bait in my opinion although I am sure some skippers use them with decent success. As mentioned, monel is the only way to go...

I'll shoot you a PM with my contact info if you want.

Good luck, catchem up and feel free to get in contact with me.

Box, talked with Skippa Stew yesterday as he was driving North and he mentioned that he was over at your house for a little while and that you helped out with some gear too...pretty awesome on your part.

I was upset about not being able to make it North for this past overnighter. MHC is somewhat of a hard place to get to from Florida. It's got a pretty phenomenal fishery though!

One of these days, I'm sure I'll get to introduce myself...Cap mentioned doing some yard work in the coming weeks so I'll be up there soon.

Sounds like you had a slammer of a troll bite the other day...pretty work.
