Well Santa struck twice this week in these parts and the postal service finally delivered something today that I was really looking forward to.

I'm outfitting our new boat for several Bahama runs planned this year, and Alan at BahamaLure got the first order. To say his lures are beautiful would be an understatement of epic proportions. The detail in each and every head is incredible and needs to be seen in person to truly be appreciated. As far as I was aware, BahamaLures were only keel-weighted on the larger sized heads he was making. When I expressed to Alan that I was really looking for smaller lures that were keel-weighted, he informed me that he just reworked his entire lure line to meet the needs of those who fish lures in the 9" range as I do. PERFECT!!! To my surprise, all the lures also featured hook locks in the back of the heads so the hooks can be locked into exact running positions. Thanks for not only meeting, but exceeding my expectations Alan.

Wow! B lures were already beautiful stuff, now adding keel weights is a big step forward. I am a firm believer in keel weighted lures. That is basically the only way to keep most lures from spinning when trolled, even the straight cuts. It also enables one to rig his single hook stiff rigs to run upright, instead of down. (Check back to the Roddy Hays post about these things.)

Keel weighting is also important for crazy dudes like me, my staff and some of our customers who rig their skirt colors upside down because we believe that the fish can see and target them that way. That sort of skirting also makes a given lure stand out as different from healthy, natural baits, and so we believe that this also makes fish see and target them better. If others don't buy into that, that's okay with us..."beauty is in the eye of the beholder", as the old lady said as she kissed the cow.

We go so far as to produce adjustable keel weights in our trolling lures. This makes it easy to alter their running characteristics when it comes to sea conditions, speeds, and even what certain kinds of fish prefer.

I'm not trying to sell our lures here. We don't sell them, except to customers who bought them in the past, like them, and want more. Otherwise, we make some for ourselves for the relatively few times that we run traditional-type lures, and that's usually behind a SuperBar.

Here's a look at a Cabo Tiger with it's adjustable and/or trim-able keel weight that can be slid forward or backwards to get the right action for a given day or species. There are more keel inserts available for the side jet ports, which run completely through the head.

As I said up top, I'm glad to see those Bahama Lures getting improved, including the hook rig locking port, another important lure feature IMO. Nice going!

(And yup, the skirting is upside down...or what we call "right side up).
