Background Checks on Captains/Mates?

Do any of you guys perform background checks on your captains or mates? I have had several emails from guys wanting to freelance at the helm and in the pit if I need it and I am kind of wary having a guy I do not really know that knows the ins and outs of my boat, ie, where the keys are, the dock box lock code, etc. This is aimed at the guys on big boats and little boats. My little boat was not cheap and neither was the tackle and that is nothing compared to a sportfisher with lots of gold for the stream. I know you guys that jig have serious $$$ invested as well and I have some $300+ light tackle spinning outfits.

Your thoughts? Is it worth it? Do you drug test your mates, I believe it is required if they have any remote chance of handling the vessel? Is there a program out there that combines drug testing and background checks for mates or captains?

Now to maintain your capt license you have to have a TWIC card (homeland security). Just went and applied for mine and they do background check and we have always had to be enrolled in random drug check for license. Not sure how extensive the background check is but they scanned in fingerprints, etc. and one guy there had been waiting 3 months for his TWIC because of background check issues. This doesn't apply to mates but it at least gives some check for your capt if he has gotten his TWIC card.

Capts. and mates both are suppose to be on a random drug testing program, if not you are out of compliance. Also you are suppose to file paper work with the USCG each year to show that you are in compliance...
