Well I'm back and almost fully recovered from my annual trip to Tahsis, Vancouver, BC. This little drinking town with a fishing problem has been a vacation spot for me over the last several years as I have a lifelong friend who lives there during the summer and invites me up for a week or two every year. Extra clothing was necessary in the AM on most days (about mid 50's) and usually high 70's or low 80's in the afternoons. On the day these photo's were taken, it was rainy and foggy all day and was the only bad weather we experienced in the 10 days I was there.
This year the King Salmon fishing was very slow (locals blamed the slow King fishing on the excessive rain this season) and we only caught two over the 6 days we fished, but, Coho salmon and Halibut were very plentiful and we limited on these fish every day we fished for them.
One of the highlights of the trip was my catching of a Humboldt squid. This creature scaled out at about 20# and was the first one caught in several years in this area, but later in the week, several more were landed. Actually, another one was brought i on the day I caught mine and the Greek angler who caught it instructed me as to how it should be cleaned, prepared and cooked. Delicious calamari, plus my friend has a years worth of halibut bait. (we only ate the cape, not the head, tentacles or wings) I caught it on a coyote spoon (a normal salmon lure) trolled deep (190' on a down-rigger in 200' of water trolled at 2.5 MPH) It was hilarious when my friend, in the process of netting this critter, was squirted with about 5 gallons of water out of it's 2" fire-hose. Hit him square in the face. We really though it was funny, but my friend didn't think so.
