Late April is still a bit early for sportfishing in the Azores.

The Sao Miguel commercial boats usually start to catch jumbo Bigeyes around mid-May and there is sometimes a brief Giant Bluefin bite in early June, but Marlin fishing usually doesnt get started until July. It might be difficult finding a charter operation working that early?

In any case, you willl have a fun and interesting trip and enjoy some great food. What island(s) are you visiting?

Horta in Faial has the most developed sportfishing fleet. But you are probably better off trying to book one of the operators in Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel (if they are fishing?) as they probably have better access to the May Bigeye run there. Again, I think late-April is too early for you to have a reasonable chance of success.

In any case, make sure you eat some Limpets...

    Rich,

No, no and no. Not only will the fish you find just be albacore or small big-eye, but the weather is still really unsettled and most boats are way out the water. Most years the blue marlin bite only starts around August (even if they put in for July 4th).

For comparison sakes, the Canaries will just be starting to see blues in April, and Madeira will still be on school 25 - 125lb big-eye, as a rule.

Are you going there for the season with a boat, traveling through, or something else ? If you're taking a boat there I would plan for Aug 1st as a start date. July can be bloody slow, if not green and cold.

Roddy - I was hopeing you would see this. No, I'm not taking the boat there, was just looking for an interesting place to go. Taking charter clients tropical in February, looking for something a little different. I thought that the weather might be an issue with the Azores. Will be fishing out of Jupiter the end of December, you going to be in the neighborhood ??
