I bought the Hx last year but not the wide one. On one over night trip we gave up using the 50's and 30's and just jigged or drifted chunks back with the Hx. Probably landed 4 that night over 80#'s. After using it, guys on the boat agreed it was better than the torsa (single speed). Great reel, I've got mine filled with 180# PP, no leader needed.
the thing that was so amazing to me is they said one single crank of the handle draws in 44'' of line! Now that is badass! So you guys think 80lb braid with a 50 lb or so topshot?
Tuna Chunking primarily.... Almost all of our chunking is overnight. But i am sure it will find its way into the trolling spread.... And i also do a few deep drop trips every year for winter seabass, and tilefish. does that help?
Unless you're gonna use it a lot for trolling, I wouldn't bother with the topshot, especially 50lb. Really no point having a reel that will pull that much drag and only putting 50lb line somewher in the connection. I've just been using straight braid (180#) and the tuna don't seem to be shy, talked to the Captain of the Shelly II and he just uses straight braid for the pig bluefins on the lumps during the day. Even caught a 40# hoo trolling with it in the fall, just have to use less strike drag to make up for not having any stretch.
Thanks for the info longfin. The yellowfin i run across always seem to be leader shy, and i am successful with fluorocarbon leader, i have never sent out straight braid with a chunk bait, but after your testimony i suppose it is something to try. Wow 180lb braid on there? That beefy! How many yards of 180 fits on the HX? also what color reel did you go for? I love the look of the purple ones, very unique.
