Fuel prices affect all the products and services we purchase. Not just charter trips. Petroleum in some form is in alot of the products we buy and is used in getting all products to the market. The point being that if fuel prices stay at these levels we are gonna have a major recession and most charter boats won't have to worry about fuel prices because not nearly as many people will be chartering boats. The real sh!t is gonna hit the fan when everyone sees the cost to heat their home double or triple this winter. Chartering boats will be the furthest thing from alot of peoples minds. As for me I will keep going out on my 24 ft'er often and chartering for trips to the canyons, but I definitely would want the full cost disclosed before departure. The average person chartering a boat doesn't realize how much fuel a twin diesel boat burns and I believe with Wahoon's idea would definitely cost any boat who does it that way customers for life because of the misunderstanding of fuel consumption and the big bill that would be awaiting them at the fuel dock. A rate increase of $300 to $400 portrayed as a temporary fuel surcharge until fuel rates stabilize would suffice. That way when fuel returns to normal prices the charter boats can return to their normal rates and won't risk losing customers to any misunderstandings. The customer should always have the right to cancel if they don't agree or can't afford the Temp increase. It's business 101, the customer always has to be happy or the business won't survive. Let's all hope this fuel crisis is only temporary or we are all are going to be alot poorer, not just the guys who make their living on the sea.

I have to disagree with Marty's proposal. The customer should know what he is getting and how much he is going to have to pay before services are given. I agree with the Ark. Set the rate for the what is expected, and if you don't need to charge that much give the discounted rate or simply pocket it as profit.
This pay the fuel bill at the end of the day stuff, seems a bit amatuer. Charters know what they should burn in fuel. They do it multiple times a week, if not everyday. Do the math, set your rate, and provide a quality product. If fuel prices rise further, re-adjust. |

Yes Amatuer. Its sounds like a way to hide higher prices. Yes economics forces us all to raise prices. Its just something that you have to do in order to stay in business.
I normally fish 1 or 2 days a week, even with this limited fishing I know before I leave the dock what my fuel burn will be within about 10 gallons. You do this everyday. You should know better than I do as to what kind of fuel burn you are going to get. Raising prices is hard to do, because you fear you will lose business. But you can't give away your services/products. You still have to live. People will either accept that or they won't buy. There is always going to be someone who will do it cheaper. But usually the customer looking for the cheapest isn't looking for the best. Be the best and if you deliver your price will be justified by your superior performance. |

BioDiesel
Fuel Price Solution: I think I will start making large quantities of BioDiesel and sell it for half the price of Diesel. I wonder what the fuel up regulations for a fuel that is 100% bio-degradable. I could pull a small barge around. Maybe I just discovered a new market? Mobile fueling station, with a fuel that is not a spill hazard.

Lets end this now before someone really gets PO. Everyone always seems to know how to run your business better that you do anyway. If I play games with my prices and John Q doesn't like it I am simply cutting my own throat. There are several ways to deal with the price jump in diesel and as long as your customer don't have a issue with it, the heck with everyone else! I delt with it in my own way this past July and have not had one cancelation and my trip numbers are up from last year.
