Marty,

Got to say I like your idea. Been a struggle this year, how much to take them up - don't want to scare folks off, but still need to have some left over to pay the bills.

I think the Base + Gas idea is a good one but this needs to be explained to people who Charter the boat well beforehand. This happened to me in Key West last time we were there. He hit us for an extra $100 saying that fuel costs went up since the charter had been booked. I wasn't happy that he waited until the trip was done to cover the fuel costs, especially considering we weren't more than 10 miles off shore.......

Gotta agree with Capt Adam. If I'm booking in advance I want to know what'll be in advance. Makes it easier to work out with who's going.

Tough spot to be in but I'd think you'll scare away alot of fares by not giving them the exact cost.

NC Building

I have been giving this some thought and the one thing that would concern me is there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there. I have had a lot of guest fishermen this year and sometimes it goes OK on sharing expenses, other times not. I am just happy to fish, so I never sweat it.

When you build a house, allowances are put in for carpet, fixtures etc. If you go over the budget, your expected to pay the difference.

You could make the trip a la carte similar to building a house, but you would almost have to have a signed contract/agreement to do business this way, just like you do with a house. This would spell out the costs/extras and so forth. It would have to be signed and backed with a credit card to work easy.

You may be able to add in a liability clause for people that drink too much/drugs aboard, etc. Not that it would help if someone actually got hurt as the result of being impaired.

This contract could be signed and sent in with the deposit.

Keep us up to speed on what ever you decide.

Sea Dragging,
Up here the boat doesn't leve the dock without a signed contract, no matter what you decide to do about the fuel.

Well, there you go. You could put the contract on your website, or you could mail it to the fair, and they could sign it and send it in with the deposit.

Everything would be spelled out up front, so there would be no misunderstanding. I think most people want to know what they are getting into, before making the commiment, even on a small share the expenses trip boat. Once made, a deal is a deal. Meaning that if a boat commits to a 1200.00 charter, then thats the price. If the fair commits to a tiered/a la carte trip, then thats the deal.

I think it all comes down to managing expectations. It has to be done from first contact.

By the way my cousin "reel love" and I did some calculations at lunch today. If a standard big boat trip is 5am to 5 pm. 2 hours cruise out(65 gal/hr), 8 hours trolling(maybe 10 gal/hr) and 2 hours back, the average boat/trip is 340 to maybe 370 gals of gas, even at 2.60 is $884 to $962. On a $1200 trip, not much is left.

Gettign Stiffed

I thought I would share this little story after marty said about what he would do if he thought he would get stiffed by a charter for a tip. Last year I worked as a mate as a favor to a friend of mine well we had a great day and as the charter was leaving they hand me a tip a roll with a twenty on the outside. well I think great say good bye and so on well I go in the cabin and see its a twenty wrapped around five ones. So I follow them out the parking lot wave down there bmw and say "DO You HAVE enough money to pay for the gas to get your big money waster BMW home" because here is twenty five bucks to help you for gas money well there jaws dropped and I walked away the guy came back down and gave me two hundred bucks for the day just thought I would share that story.

While I am on it here is another one a few years back on a charter we had another great day and we almost caught a limit of yellow fin well on the ride in I hear the charter talking saying well we only caught seventy five precent of our limit so we should onyl ahve to pay seventy percent of the cost. well I told the boss man who pulls back the throttles and says well gentleman get off the boat this is the twenty five precent of the trip you are not paying for well long and the short they paid.
