    Anyone ever rig/pull herring ?

Has anyone ever tried to rig them for trolling? I'm guessing they would be just like a mullet.-split the tail ??

I'm looking for any input, cause I am thinking of brining/vacuum packing a few bucket fulls for bait in a few weeks when they are running.

I have no use for them on the dinner plate, so if I don't get good feedback, I will not take them.-but it seems to be like a great source for good, fresh bait, if they can be trolled.

I have never tried to troll a dead one. The live ones are a real biatch when they get tired. They start spinning like crazy because their body is not as stream-lined as a bally or mullet. With that being the case, I wonder how difficult it would be to rig one for 7 knott trolling speed. Worst case scenario you brine 'em up and end up having to use them for chunking or chum to keep the dolphins close to the boat. Never waste a fish is what I say. Give it a try.

Unfortunately, they are too soft for trolling - especially after being frozen.

They will look really nice if you put a chain of them together, but they will also blow out in about 10 minutes.

I've caught Kings with em dead baiting, but not the first bait of choice for em. I know one thing, a Grouper will suck one down in a heart beat.

    Fishwagon,
We rigged some last summer in ME and tried trolling them. They turned to mush real quick. Use them for chunking.
