Anyone been to Isla Holbox Mexico?

Well, it looks like for the long memorial day weekend, Nansy and I will be going to Isla Holbox in Mexico. It's a tiny little stretch of sand on the northern Yucatan peninsula. I'm obviouly going to bring my fishing gear, but I'm wondering if anyone else has been there and has any pointers on things to bring or boats that I should charter. For those of you who are curious, the island is:

    Thanks for the help,

The best thing about going with the Mexican is that I'm travelling with a built in translater. I can't wait to get back to hit the canyons... I'm itchin to use the new knowledge.

Brings back memories dude! I travelled that whole area over 10 years ago so i don't have any current info but i will tell you the fishing in the Yucatan is INCREDIBLE...caught tons of bonefish, snappers, tarpon, etc it was a great trip...

For flyfishing bring lots of Borski sliders they worked great back then and likely still do...for spin fishing white and tan bucktail jigs and GULP! crab and shrimp will do wonders...good luck!!!

    Isla Holbox

I've been. It was in 2002. Don't have much time at the moment but let me sift through the memories and photos and see what I can come up with for you. I don't remember the name of our guide but I remember where he was at. We slayed the tarpon. Stand by and let me get back to this thread later. It will probably be tomorrow.

Here is a photo. It was taken after getting off of the ferry to walk into town.

Not sure if it's the right season or not but Isla Holbox has whale shark diving trips. In the words of Monty Python, "And now for something totally different."

    Good luck on the trip,

I fished the 2002 season in Isla Mujeres and needed a break, so a friend and I rented a Jeep in Cancun to take off on an excursion. I talked ($) my mate into guiding/driving us on this adventure. His family was from Merida so he knew the regions' towns and roads. He took us to Isla Holbx in search of tarpon. We found them...37 of them to be exact. They were juvies from 10-20 lbs. but a blast none the less. We caught them on both live bait and Yozuri's. I don't remember names but we walked straight into town from the ferry to the waterfront. There was a restaurant on the right with a covered eating area on the beach. I beleive that the guide's family owned the place. Hell, I'm not sure he was even a "guide" but he put us on the fish. Check there first. If it is even still there. The place may have commercialized some since I was there.

There are a few charter outfits on the island but ask around before you commit. Some of the guys will just take a gringo for a ride. Seeing as the language barrier will be no problem for you you should have no problem.

Isla Holbox is a fishing community with wonderful culture and people. I always felt safe and comfortable. There is not much to do so expect a lot of relaxing when you are not fishing. Eat early...the town shuts down around 9 PM.

I attached a couple of pics
