This is correct. And as far as the "other side" is concerned, no telling. The stream is like a river in the open ocean. It's width varies and it never runs in a straight line. Sometimes it could be seventy miles from the hill, others 150, who knows? Depends on the currents.

I made the trek two days in a row back in the late 80's. We were fishing the Hatteras Marlin Club tournament. The bite had been very slow so we decided to make the run. First day we had a double header of large Bluefin's. Second day we caught a 480 lb. Blue that won the tourney. Only one other billfish was caught during the toournament if memory serves me correctly.

Never had one, I was a lineman.

    Hatteras Canyon

I had always wondered about the far side, and also looking at charts of the area I was always curious about Hatteras Canyon, how far is that from Hatteras Inlet, or OI? Anybody ever fish out there?

It's been a long time but if memory serves me correctly, we ran about 80 or 90 miles out of Hatteras.

You guys are spoiled!!!! I run my Grady White 265 Express 95nm to ge tto the closet canyon from my marina, and have ran it 113nm out to reach one further away for tuna and billfish. The distance is not that much of an issue if you guys have a crew willing to put up more money and deal witha longer ride, but crossing the gulfstream can be tricky, there can often be strong rips and currents to run through depeidning on the conditions and you may see worse fuel economy depending on conditions as you cross it so prepare for that and possibly rougher seas. I know some guys who have done it and they love it because it is untouched by most, no crowds to fight with and the life is typically way better. Heard there is a lot more bird and top water action out there when the tuna are around, also heard of lots of good sized mahi and tons of billfish to be had.

    Cool The Other Side

We made the trek a couple years ago during the Big Rock.
It's kinda like the hail mary pass. Once you commit, you gotta go with it. You really don't know what conditions you'll have till you get there.

We found an edge that made you dream of giant blue marlin that never appeared.

Kinda cool if you have the wx.
